Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has won four and lost five of his first 10 games in charge

Former United star Cristiano Ronaldo has backed Portuguese compatriot Amorim to turn the club's fortunes around.

Ronaldo's second spell at Old Trafford ended in November 2022 following an explosive TV interview with presenter and journalist Piers Morgan.

"He [Amorim] did a fantastic job in Portugal with my [club] Sporting," said Ronaldo.

"But the Premier League is a different beast, the most competitive league in the world. I knew that it would be tough and they will continue the storm.

"But the storm will finish and the sun will rise. Things crossed, it will be good with him and I hope the best for Manchester United because it is a club I still love."

Al Nassr forward Ronaldo, 39, who was speaking at the Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai where he was named the Best Middle East player of 2024, added: "I will continue to say, the problem is not the coaches.

"It's like the aquarium and you have the fish inside and it's sick, and you take him out and fix the problem.

"If you put it back in the aquarium it will be sick again. This is the problem of Manchester United. It is the same."

Why not change the name of Manchester United to Liverpool?

Average Premier League players on title-winning wages

The Devils' Advocate podcast graphic

Presenter Gaz Drinkwater speaking on what has been described as one of the "moodiest" episodes of The Devils' Advocate ever in the wake of defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford: "I just don't think those players are very good. When a team like Brighton come in and are well coached, it almost feels like there are higher standards there than at Man Utd now.

"Amorim said they might be the worst Man Utd team ever, I think pound for pound, they are heading that way. They are absolutely heading the way of being known as the worst Manchester United team we have ever seen. I think every single one of those players knows that and feels some shame in that. If they don't they really should as that is what they are going to be remembered for.

"We have had great times in recent years winning the FA Cup, League Cup, even the Europa League. But when you compare this team to the pantheon of greats we have had, what they cost, the wages they take, then yes, every single one of them will go down as the worst Manchester United team ever. What a stain that is to have on your career."

Presenters Gaz and Joe discussed Ruben Amorim's insistence to stick to his 3-4-3 system despite United's recent failings.

Joe questions if a 'Plan B' is necessary when things aren't working.

"At least we are trying something different", said Gaz. "At least we have a manager who has his way of playing and will stick to it no matter what, an identity. We have players who aren't good enough. These players are average Premier League players on title-winning wages. That's the problem at Manchester United right now."

Lisandro Martinez receiving treatment

The unveiling of £25m signing Patrick Dorgu and teenage defender Ayden Heaven before kick-off was meant to signify a new future at Manchester United.

Marcus Rashford's departure, in addition to that of winger Antony and, possibly, Dutch full-back Tyrell Malacia, are further indications of change.

Yet it has been apparent for some considerable time it will take far more to turn United into a winning team.

Ruben Amorim's decision to utilise Kobbie Mainoo as his most significant attacking weapon does not indicate a great deal of faith in Denmark striker Rasmus Hojlund, who has not scored since mid-December, or Joshua Zirkzee, who has found the net only four times since his summer arrival from Bologna.

However, even with Amad Diallo and Alejandro Garnacho foraging either side of the England midfielder, there was not much to write home about once Mainoo had struck a post in the early moments.

Bruno Fernandes was not a threat in his deeper role and the longer the game went on, the less convincing United became.

The loss of Lisandro Martinez just compounded another bad day for Amorim and means Dorgu is likely to be thrust into action pretty quickly as Luke Shaw is only just back in training after just three substitute appearances in 12 months since his last club start - and none since 1 December.

formation problems ? Man Utd 3-4-3 might not work in the league. rest of the teams are almost all 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1.

heaven has descended on old trafford :D

More infusion of nigger power.

Hope Man United loses all its remaining league games, and gets leapfrogged by Ipswich, Leicester, Wolves, Everton, West Ham etc.
