Man who posed as police officer charged with cheating man of S$10,000

SINGAPORE: A man who posed as a police officer was charged on Monday with cheating a man of S$10,000.

29-year-old Tang Bo Xiang allegedly duped 56-year-old Woo Hong Liang into believing he was a police officer and a trainer with the Police Academy.

The incident is believed to have taken place on or before 6 August, at the United Overseas Bank at People's Park Complex.

The court heard that Tang told Woo that he needed the money as repayment for breaking a bond with the police force.

For cheating and dishonestly inducing the delivery of property, Tang can be jailed 10 years and fined.

He approached a man at People’s Park Complex and told the man he was a policeman.

He then asked the man, Mr Woo Hong Liang, to give him S$10,000.

For pretending to be a police officer, Tang Bo Xiang, 29, was charged in court today for cheating, Channel NewsAsia reported.

Tang allegedly told Mr Woo, who was at the United Overseas Bank in the building, that he was also a trainer with the Police Academy.

He tricked the elder man into believing that he needed the money to make payment for breaking a bond with the police force, Channel NewsAsia reported.

The incident happened on or before 6 August.

If convicted, Tang faces a jail sentence of up to 10 years and/or a fine.
