A customer ordered from a Pasir Ris coffee shop stall and was surprised to be charged an extra 80 cents for his food to be separated in his own container.

Stomper Pete had previously ordered the roast pork and char siew rice at the Pasir Ris Drive 6 stall on Sept 30 and paid $7. That was for dining in.

The next day, he ordered the same thing for takeaway and was charged $8.

"Which I didn't mind paying," said the Stomper.

"I brought my own container and asked for meat, rice, and sauce to be packed separately.

"The final bill came up to $8.80."

"When I asked why, the lady explained that the extra $0.80 was the labour charge for separation of the items.

He asked Stomp whether it was reasonable because he didn't think so.

"I was rushing to work, so I didn't pursue further," said the Stomper. "I'm just sharing this here so that those around Pasir Ris are aware."

Should he be charged 80 cents more for "labour"?

A previous case reported by Stomp in January 2024 may help shed some light on the matter.

Another Stomper had questioned why a City Plaza noodle stall was charging an extra 50 cents for takeaways even when you bring your own container.

In response to a Stomp query, a spokesperson for Poon Nah City Home Made Noodle explained that customers bringing their own containers can be quite hard for the F&B business.

"When 10 customers bring their own containers, we do get mixed up and our kitchen space is very small," said the spokesperson.

"And we wash the containers before pouring the food in."

So in that case, there was some extra "labour" involved.

better to open mouth and ask hawker to pour everything inside. including gst should be $6.9?

There are so many recipes available online that my family enjoys black pepper/chilli crab, chicken rice, seafood laksa, Vietnamese beef noodles, Hong Kong mee, Penang char kway teow, prawn noodles etc. at home in generous portions at a fraction of the price.

Some stupid hawkers insist on charging for takeaways even when I bring my own containers, because the sign says 20 cents for takeaway!
a reason why they remain as hawkers all their lives. next time if they still insist on a takeaway charge tell them to serve on plate for makan at table then scoop meal into container yourself.
