FOR one hour, toddler Natalie Nikie Alisyia Sallehan was left alone at home with her two younger sisters - while her parents went out to buy a present for her upcoming second birthday. When they returned to find Nikie playing with her father's cigarettes, Sallehan Allaudin flew into a rage, shouted at her and kicked and stamped on her. On Monday, on the first day of Sallehan's trial for the murder of his daughter, his wife used a mannequin to demonstrate how he had stepped on Nikie in the kitchen of their two-room flat rental flat. But Sallehan's lawyer disputed Madam Rozanah Mohamed Yusoff's version, turning around to accuse the 24-year-old woman of causing Nikie's death by hitting the toddler with a broom. The trial is scheduled to run for nine days. Anyone convicted of murder faces a mandatory death penalty.

SINGAPORE: A Singaporean man has gone on trial charged with murdering his 23-month-old daughter in a fit of rage after he caught her playing with his cigarettes, court officials said on Tuesday.

Sallehan Allaudin, 26, is accused of fatally beating his daughter Nikie in January ahead of her second birthday, causing her to die of a ruptured vein. If convicted, he could face death by hanging.

The High Court was told on Monday that Sallehan, who had just returned home with his wife with a present for Nikie, went berserk after seeing that the toddler had torn up and scattered his cigarettes, the Straits Times reported on Tuesday.

Sallehan has pleaded not guilty to the charge. His wife, Rozanah Mohamed Yusoff, 24, used a mannequin to show the court how Sallehan allegedly kicked and stomped on their daughter in the kitchen, the newspaper said.

According to the report, the couple, who have two younger daughters, called for an ambulance when Nikie started bleeding from the nose, but she died from her injuries.

"I did not go into the kitchen to stop my husband as I thought that was the way he wanted to discipline Nikie," the wife was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

Cleaner spared death penalty

<!-- by line --> By Khushwant Singh

THE cleaner, who attacked and killed his 23-month-old daughter, was spared the death penalty on Wednesday when the High Court reduced his murder charge and convicted him for culpable homicide instead. Justice Lee Seiu Kin held that the 27-year-old , who is not named in the judgement, had not intended to kill his daughter - a key factor in a murder charge. The man will be sentenced next week and faces up to 10 years jail or caning or fine, or both. The father of three had attacked the girl on the evening of Jan 6 last year at the family's Boon Lay flat. He and his wife had earlier gone out that day to buy a birthday present for the girl, leaving her and her two younger sisters - one just over a year old and the other two months old - at home. When the couple returned, she was found eating and playing with her father's cigarettes. He snapped, pulled her to the kitchen where he slapped, punched and kicked her till she turned blue. The blows that he landed on the 10-kg toddler were so heavy that the attack was akin to a 360kg man whaling on a 60kg man, but the man did not know this, said the judge. An autopsy found she died of a rare rupture in a major vein that supplied blood to the lower part of her body. Lawyer N. Kanagavijayan, argued that his client could not have forseen that his punches would result in a rupture of the vein.

Cleaner escapes gallows

Man loved his daughter and did not intend to kill her, High Court rules

<!-- by line --> By K.C. Vijayan

<!-- end left side bar --> <!-- story content : start --> A CLEANER who attacked and killed his 23-month-old daughter was spared the death penalty yesterday when the High Court acquitted him of murder and convicted him of culpable homicide instead. While his blows were heavy enough to cause the toddler to bleed internally, he had not intended to kill her, concluded Justice Lee Seiu Kin. But the cleaner, whose identity cannot be revealed in order to protect his other young children, lost control of himself when he bludgeoned his eldest child to death. The attack on the 10kg toddler was not unlike a 360kg man raining blows on a 60kg victim, but the cleaner could not have known that, said Justice Lee.

The man assaulted his daughter on Jan 6 last year in their Boon Lay flat.
He and his wife had gone out to buy a birthday present for her, leaving all of their three children alone at home. The girl would have turned two on Jan 28. He lost his temper when he arrived home to find her chewing on his cigarettes. He pulled her into the kitchen and slapped, punched and kicked her till she turned blue. Justice Lee said, however, it seemed clear that the cleaner loved the child. Witnesses such as his mother-in-law testified to this, even though he had a violent streak and had physically abused the child.

SINGAPORE : A 27-year-old cleaner has been sentenced to six years jail for killing his 23-month-old daughter in January last year.

He had punched and slapped the girl after he caught her playing with his cigarettes in their Boon Lay flat.

The toddler died after one of her major veins ruptured, causing blood to collect inside her heart which later stopped pumping.

The cleaner who cannot be named to protect the identity of his other children was originally charged with murder – a capital offence.

However, Justice Lee Seiu Kin reduced it to culpable homicide earlier this year as there was no evidence that the cleaner intended to kill his daughter.

<!-- story content : start --> SALLEHAN Allaudin punched and slapped his two-year-old daughter Nikie to death in a case of 'extreme violence' that caused her to suffer a tear in a major vein near her heart. On Monday, the cleaner was jailed six years by the High Court after Justice Lee Seiu Kin felt the cleaner had done it in a fit of anger. The judge disagreed with the prosecution that Sallehan's actions were premeditated. Justice Lee said that there was no doubt that Sallehan loved Nikie, the eldest of his three children, all daughters. Her full name is Natalie Nikie Alisyia Sallehan.

On the day he hit the child, the man was returning home after buying her a present. When he saw her chewing on the tobacco from his broken cigarettes, however, his emotions boiled over. Just two days earlier, he had scolded her for doing just that, and he wanted to teach her a lesson so that she would not do it again. The man's personal frustrations - his inability to support his family and insecurities about his wife's suspected infidelity - also tipped him over, said Justice Lee.

Sallehan was initially tried for murder but after the nine-day trial, he was found guilty and convicted of culpable homicide last month. His wife, Madam Rozanah Mohamed Yusoff, 25, told reporters that he was disappointed with the severe sentence. She has forgiven her husband and is looking forward to his return.

Father who beat toddler to death gets 6 years

THE father who killed his two-year-old daughter in a rage was jailed for six years yesterday.

Sallehan Allaudin, 27, was adjudged to have acted in a fit of rage upon catching the girl playing with his cigarettes.

Justice Lee Seiu Kin of the High Court disagreed with the prosecution that the cleaner’s actions were premeditated.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Stella Tan had argued for Sallehan to be jailed for the maximum 10 years as a deterrent; she had also called for him to be caned as he had used extreme violence on a vulnerable victim.

But Justice Lee said deterrent penalties carry little effect in crimes committed in a fit of rage or passion. He also said he did not doubt Sallehan loved his daughter, Natalie Nikie Alisyia Sallehan, the eldest of his three children, all daughters.

Sallehan was first tried for murder but was acquitted and found guilty of culpable homicide. During last year’s trial, the court heard he went home on Jan 6 with a present for Nikie. But he found her breaking his cigarettes just two days after scolding her for doing so, and rage overcame him.

Justice Lee said Sallehan also had personal frustrations, which he took out on Nikie: He had been troubled by his inability to support his family and suspected his wife was cheating on him.

He scolded the child and when she cried, slapped her. As her wails got louder, he punched her until she bled from the nose.

An autopsy found she died of a rupture in a major vein.

Sallehan’s lawyer N. Kanagavijayan, asking for leniency, said the beating was a “one-off” and that Sallehan was not prone to violence.

His wife Rozanah Mohamed Yusoff, 25, who was in court yesterday, said she was looking forward to his release. “He’s a good, kind father and I trust him with our other children.”

Man who kills daughter gets six years' jail

By Vivien Chan and Nurul Asyikin Mohd Nasir

Sallehan Allaudin, 27, was yesterday sentenced to six years' jail for killing his two-year-old daughter. He was spared the cane. He was convicted of manslaughter last month.

Sallehan had flown into a rage on Jan 6 last year when he saw his daughter, Natalie Nikie Alisyia Sallehan, playing with his cigarettes.

During a nine-day trial last October, the cleaner admitted to slapping and punching the girl on her back but denied kicking and stomping on her.

On March 10, Sallehan wrote his wife a heartfelt letter, his first from prison, expressing regret for his actions.

In an interview with The New Paper, his wife, Madam Rozanah Mohamed Yusoff, showed The New Paper the letter and said that she would "want to wait for him".

'Shocking, horrendous case'

By Selina lum

THE killing of a toddler, barely two years old, by her own father was 'one of the worst' it had seen, said the Court of Appeal as it raised Sallehan Allaudin's six-year jail term to the maximum 10 years. Sallehan was also ordered to be caned 10 strokes.

'This is a sad, shocking and horrendous case,' said Justice Chao Hick Tin, as he gave the three-judge court's decision, saying that the original sentence was 'manifestly inadequate'. Sallehan, 28, flew into a rage in January last year when he returned home to see his daughter playing with his cigarettes in the living room. He dragged her to the kitchen, where he repeatedly assaulted her.

He was tried for murder but found guilty of a lesser charge of manslaughter and sentenced to six years' jail. On Monday, prosecutors appealed for a longer jail term. After allowing the appeal, the court also asked for prosecutors to arrange for welfare services officers to keep tabs on Sallehan's two younger children as he will be released in six years on good behaviour.

SINGAPORE: Sallehan Allaudin, the father who caused the death of his daughter after she had played with his cigarettes was on Monday jailed for four more years.

He had been jailed six years in April but the prosecution on Monday successfully appealed against that sentence.

While an appeal judge took issue with the prosecution on the conduct of its case, the Court of Appeal upped Sallehan's jail term for "one of the worst cases" it had seen.

Sallehan had beaten his daughter to death on January 6, last year.

Bus driver who killed teenage step-daughter escapes hanging, but Court of Appeal stiffens sentence of father who caused toddler's death

A FATHER who beat his almost two-year-old daughter to death had his six-year jail sentence raised to the maximum 10 years yesterday, with a judge calling it 'one of the worst cases' he had seen. Sallehan Allaudin, 28, was also ordered to be given 10 strokes of the cane by the Court of Appeal.

'This is a sad, shocking and horrendous case,' said Justice Chao Hick Tin as he delivered the three-judge court's decision, saying the original sentence was 'manifestly inadequate'. Sallehan killed Natalie Nikie Alisyia after coming home to find the 23-month-old chewing on his cigarettes on Jan 6 last year.

The cleaner and his wife had left Nikie and her two younger sisters - one a year old and the other two months old - at home while they went to buy her a birthday present. When the couple returned to the family's Boon Lay flat, Sallehan flew into a rage. He said he scolded Nikie, and began slapping and punching her. His wife testified that he also kicked and stamped on the girl, although he denied this.
