Man nabbed for smuggling puppies
By Saifulbahri Ismail | Posted: 19 May 2011 1632 hrs

SINGAPORE: A 31-year-old Malaysian man has been arrested for trying to smuggle 15 puppies into Singapore.

The Immigration & Checkpoints Authority discovered the puppies in a Malaysia-registered car during a routine check at the Woodlands Checkpoint on Monday.

The puppies were hidden under the rear passenger seat of the car.

Preliminary investigations revealed the driver was engaged by a Malaysian Chinese, and was to be paid a sum of RM800 for the delivery.

He had agreed to the deal as he needed money for his wedding.

The man is currently under investigation by the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority (AVA).

Those caught importing animals or live birds without a permit can be fined up to S$10,000 and jailed for up to a year.
