SINGAPORE: A carpenter was sentenced to six months' jail on Monday for stealing a pair of birds.

Yeo Boo Hock, 43, stole two 'Jambul' birds worth $650 and two bird cages valued at $600 from a house in Onan Road in August this year.

The court heard how Yeo and his co-accused Ang Choon Keong were walking along Onan Road at about 12.50am.

They saw the birds in cages hanging outside a house and, upon Ang's suggestion, decided to steal them with a bamboo pole they found nearby.

District Judge Low Wee Ping asked Yeo why he stole the birds, but the accused said he didn't know.

The judge noted that Yeo had committed several offences in the past, including theft and possession of drugs.

Referring to Ang, Judge Low said Yeo should have told his accomplice off for suggesting the theft of the birds.

The judge said he hopes Yeo learns his lesson and appreciate the leniency shown by the court.. - CNA/de
