Man jailed for residents' corner storeroom fire
By Elena Chong
A MAN who deliberately threw a lit cigarette into a residents' corner store room was jailed for three months on Tuesday for mischief by fire.
Anuar Abdul Razat, 43, was ordered to pay compensation of $482.50 for the damage caused to the residents' corner at Block 572 Hougang Street 51.
As he cannot pay the compensation, he will serve two days in default.
Assistant Superintendent Raj Kishore Rai said Anuar was sitting at the RC on Feb 11, 2011 when he went to the back to smoke a cigarette.
After finishing it, he purposely threw the cigarette butt into the window of the residents' corner storeroom, which caught fire.
Anuar, who has several unrelated previous convictions, could have been jailed for up to seven years and fined.
