KUALA LUMPUR (Malaysia) - A LAWYER says a Malaysian court has sentenced a businessman to six months in jail for attacking former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad with pepper spray. Lawyer Shamsul Bahrain Ibrahim says a magistrate court in northeast Kelantan state found his client, Nik Sapeia Nik Yusoff, guilty of causing hurt to Mahathir with a dangerous substance in July 2006. Mr Mahathir stepped down in 2003 after 22 years in power. He was preparing to address a crowd at the state airport when Nik Sapeia fired pepper spray at him. Mr Mahathir recovered and blamed the attack on people seeking to silence him due to his criticism of the government at the time. Mr Shamsul said on Thursday the court suspended the jail sentence pending appeal. The offense carries a maximum penalty of three years imprisonment. -- AP
