SINGAPORE: A 26-year-old man was on Wednesday sentenced to two years' jail and six strokes of the cane by a district court for robbing a man at an ATM.
Mohamad Fauzi Mohamad Shariff pleaded guilty to the offence, which took place on the morning of August 3 this year at a DBS Bank ATM located at the entrance of Orchard Towers.
The court heard that Fauzi had been smoking at the entrance of Orchard Towers when he saw the victim, 61-year-old Dunn Neil Thomas, arrive.
As Mr Dunn was at the ATM, Fauzi walked towards him, punched him once on his right cheek, and grabbed S$100 that had just been dispensed from the machine before fleeing the scene.
Mr Dunn went after Fauzi but was not able to catch up. A security officer on duty called the police.
Fauzi was arrested some two weeks later.
He could have been jailed up to 10 years and caned for the offence. - CNA/gn
