SINGAPORE: A man who raped his young cousin some 14 years ago was on Wednesday sentenced to seven years' jail and nine strokes of the cane.
The man was about 17 when he raped his then-eight-year-old cousin.
The man, who is in his thirties now, cannot be identified to protect the victim's identity.
His offences came to light on August 24, 2011, when the girl made a police report.
The court heard the victim was seven years old when she moved in with the man and his family, when her parents went through a divorce.
She stayed with the family for some three years, until 2001.
Sometime in 1999, the man planned to rape his young cousin, after being addicted to watching pornography.
He took her to a stair landing at the block where they lived.
But he backed out after a passer-by walked in on them.
Days later, he again brought her to a stair landing where he raped her.
The prosecutors highlighted various aggravating factors of the case.
They said the man, being the victim's elder cousin, had abused his position of trust and authority.
He had also planned his act despite having days to reflect on his action, after his failed attempt. - CNA/nd
