SINGAPORE — Within a span of 51 minutes, Lim Ken Ann went to a toilet at Paya Lebar Square mall at least nine times to film men relieving themselves.
One of the men spotted Lim trying to film him and confronted Lim. Lim dropped his phone and later tried to delete the videos.
On Thursday (April 29), the 28-year-old Malaysian man was jailed three weeks after pleading guilty to one charge each of criminal trespass and making an obscene film.
Eight other charges of the second offence were taken into consideration for sentencing, while the prosecution withdrew three charges against him.
The court heard that Lim went to Paya Lebar Square on Sept 30 in 2019 with his colleagues to deposit his salary.
When his colleagues left, he stayed at the mall and entered the men’s toilet on the first floor.
Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Heershan Kaur told the court that he wanted “to take videos of men using the toilet without their knowledge and consent, as he felt an urge to do so”.
When a man entered the cubicle next to his, Lim placed his mobile phone over the cubicle partition while standing on the toilet bowl lid. In this way, he recorded nine videos capturing 12 men.
When a 33-year-old man was urinating, he looked up and noticed Lim’s phone recording him.
The victim tried to snatch the phone but it fell to the floor out of his reach. He then left his cubicle and managed to open the door to Lim’s.
He asked for the phone but Lim refused and tried to delete the videos. The victim then grabbed it and they struggled briefly.
Lim accidentally injured the other man’s wrist in the process, before deciding to comply with his request. The two men then proceeded to the security counter and the police were informed.
