Man held for GST evasion

SINGAPORE Customs on Thursday arrested a Singaporean man for fraudulent evasion of duty and Goods and Services Tax (GST) for the import of motor cars from Japan. Mr Jeremy Han Wan Kwang, 37, faces 124 charges for evasion of duty and GST involving the import of 206 units of Japanese cars of various makes.

The under-declarations between August 2005 and April 2006 had resulted in the short payment of duty and GST amounting to $176,774.62. Han will be charged in court on Friday morning. Singapore Customs warned that it would take action against any traders who flout customs regulations to defraud the state or to gain an unfair advantage over other traders.

Under the Customs Act, importers must ensure the accuracy and completeness of the values and other related costs declared to Customs. Convicted offenders can be fined up to 20 times the amount of duty and GST evaded or jailed, or both. They also have to make good the short-paid duty and GST.
