Man throws shoe at Greek prime minister

Sep 11, 2010, 15:36 GMT

Athens - A man threw a shoe at Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou on Saturday in protest at the socialist government's austerity measures.

The shoe missed its intended target and the man was arrested along with two accomplices, radio reports said.

The incident took place in the northern city of Thessaloniki where the prime minister was attending the opening of an international exhibition.

The 49-year-old assailant told reporters he was a radiologist and member of an ultra conservative organization. He said he threw the shoe in protest at government fiscal and labour reforms.

The austerity measures were introduced in a bid to get the budget deficit down from around 14 per cent of gross domestic product to under the European Union-mandated limit of 3 per cent by 2014.

Greece was saved from default in May by fellow euro area members, which agreed to lend it 80 billion euros over three years in return f. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) added 30 billion euros.

Unions and other organization have a called a demonstration in Thessaloniki on Saturday evening to protest the government's policies.

A man attempted to throw a shoe at Prime Minister George Papandreou but was stopped by security guards Saturday at the 75th Thessaloniki International Fair.

The attempt by the unidentified 60-year-old man, who was later arrested, seemed to have been made in a burst of anger over harsh austerity measures implemented by Papandreou's government.

The episode was expected to raise the level of alert for police forces in Thessaloniki, where security measures were already draconian ahead of large protests later Saturday against the government's economic policies.

More than 4,500 police have been deployed in the city to keep order amidst fears that the protests could end in violence.

Austere government policies, such as pay cuts and tax increases, implemented in an attempt to ease Greece's economic problems still face strong opposition from citizens and labor unions.
