Man gets 5 years’ corrective training,12 strokes for repeat offences

SINGAPORE: A 39-year-old man was sentenced to five years' corrective training and 12 strokes of the cane for repeat housebreaking and theft offences.
Corrective training is a harsher prison regime for repeat offenders, who can be jailed between five and 14 years with no remission for good behaviour.
Pek Kok Chong, who is unemployed, admitted to three charges - two of housebreaking to commit theft and one of stealing a bicycle.
One of the crimes was reported by a housewife staying on the eighth floor of Block 641 at Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4.
On June 26, she spotted Pek removing the glass panel from the window of a flat along the common corridor and climbing in.
When the police arrived, they heard sounds within the flat and knocked on the door.
While waiting for the door to be opened, the police received a call that there was a man sitting on the window ledge of the flat.
After investigating, the police found out Pek had tied curtains to the window grilles to climb down to the unit on the seventh floor.
The occupant of the unit, a housewife who was looking after her grandchild, was shocked to see Pek standing on the window grilles outside her bedroom.
She screamed and ran out of the house to ask for help.
Pek then used her curtains to climb down to the unit on the sixth floor and hid inside it.
With the help of the Singapore Civil Defence Force, the police entered the unit and detained Pek.
They found on Pek items worth S$123.17 that were stolen from the eighth-floor unit. The items included 52 Singapore S$2 notes.
Pek admitted in custody that he had broken into a flat at Block 645 in Ang Mo Kio Avenue 6 on June 25. The unit belongs to a clinic assistant who was in a relationship with Pek at that time.
He stole a Nintendo DS game console worth S$250 and jewellery worth S$200.
Previously, on June 12, Pek had stolen a bicycle worth S$288 that was displayed outside a shop in Ang Mo Kio.
Pek had also been convicted of the offence of housebreaking in 2009. - CNA/gn
