An elderly man has cheated death after he fell off a station platform and into the path of an oncoming train in Melbourne's outer east.

Police believe the 88-year-old Ferntree Gully man may have fainted before he tumbled off Boronia station platform directly onto the railway tracks as a train approached.

Police said the train driver saw the man lying on the tracks and slammed on the emergency brakes, coming to a stop only a matter of inches from the unconscious man's head.

Senior Sergeant Wayne Fielding told 7News: "The driver of the train has done an extremely good job in avoiding any serious injuries to this gentleman.

"Half a second later and the coroner may have been involved."

Paramedics were called to treat the man at the scene.

He was taken to the Alfred Hospital in a stable condition.

Train services on the Belgrave line suffered minor disruptions.
