The disqualified driver who allegedly knocked down two Primary 6 boys in Tampines on 8 July was charged in court yesterday (12 July).

Tong Chee Wei, 32, who is a self-employed supervisor , faced four charges under the Road Traffic Act, and one charge under the Motor Vehicles Act, Channel News Asia reported.

They include driving without insurance coverage, dangerous driving by beating the red light and hitting two boys, failing to stop after the accident and rendering assistance.

Tong was successfully granted leave of jurisdiction to go to Bangkok between 16 and 21 July for business and to visit his girlfriend.

Police raised his bail from $10,000 to $15,000.

Twin brothers Tan Jun An and Tan Jun Xi, both 12, were using a pedestrian crossing near block 401 along Tampines Avenue 7, when they were knocked down by Tong’s car.

They were sent to KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital for treatment.

Tong was arrested at his home at Tampines Street 41 three hours later. Investigations showed he had been banned from driving for 18 months from 22 February 2012, The Straits Times reported.

His lawyer has asked for a six-week adjournment to look into the case, and he will be back in court on 23 August.
