SINGAPORE - A man lost custody of his daughter to his wife after it was discovered that he refused to let her wear underwear to school.
Court documents revealed that the Serbian family had migrated to Singapore in June, 2006, a Shin Min report said on Wednesday.
The Chinese evening daily said that the couple subsequently divorced in November, 2008 and the husband obtained full custodial rights to the daughter.
But after staying in Singapore for three years, the wife decided to apply for the custody of their daughter on the basis that her husband had neglected to take good care of their child.
According to the wife's account, the husband had refused to let the daughter wear underwear to school on many occassions. She also claimed that the father failed to pay the daughter's school fees on time, thus preventing her from going to school.
Among other things, the wife also argued that the daughter had an urgent illness which required an operation. However the husband did not seek medical attention for her until much later.
Court documents also showed that the husband alleged the daughter was afraid of living together with the wife and her ex-husband and her 11-year-old stepsister. But the court found that this was untrue.
In January 2010, the court decided to award custody of the daughter to the wife, with the husband having the right to visit the child only under supervision. The husband's appeal was rejected.
In the ruling, the judge noted that the husband's application for a personal protection order for his daughter against his wife was rejected seven times. The judge also noted that investigations revealed nothing to support the husband's claim that the wife had abused their daughter.
