The husband of a cleaning firm owner was charged in court on Thursday for his role in what the Manpower Ministry refers to as a 'phantom worker' scam.
Tay Kheng Hin, 51, was charged with abetting his wife, Yeo Bog Hong in making false declarations in work permit applications. Yeo, who owns Hao Wei Cleaning & Maintenance Service, is alleged to have falsely declared the number of locals employed so as to inflate the company's foreign workers' entitlement.
Tay faces 20 counts for abetting Yeo and one charge for abetting the illegal employment of a Chinese national as a cleaner.
As Tay Kheng Hin is a previous offender, he will be liable to a mandatory jail sentence if convicted, said the Ministry of Manpower.
