Man caught in "gloryhole" sex act
Man caught in "gloryhole" sex act at second level Golden Mile Complex
He knew it was illegal. He had even been caught doing the dirty deed in the same toilet once before.
Yet he claimed he would return to the toilet every
fortnight for the past four years.
He would allegedly lock himself in a particular cubicle with a hole in the partition and engage in a sex act with a man in the next cubicle.
On Friday, he pushed his luck too far.
He was arrested in the dirty toilet cubicle on the second level of Golden Mile Complex in Singapore.
A member of the public had noticed that the last two cubicles of the toilet had been locked for too long. The mall's security officers were alerted and they kicked open the doors of the two cubicles around 4pm.
They got hold of one of the men - the same one they had let go sometime back.
The man in the other cubicle, described as smartly dressed and in his 30s, fled.
The 30-year-old who was arrested did not put up a struggle, said security officers.
The bespectacled man dressed in a blue T-shirt and jeans spoke to The New Paper with his head bowed while being held by three security officers.
"I know it is illegal, but I'm taking my chances," he said.
"It's just my bad luck. Many others are doing it too. I know it sounds silly, but it's how I am. I just wanted to have fun."
He claimed he did not know the other man.
"I have never met him before. When someone enters the cubicle next to mine, I take peeks through the hole and see if the other man expresses interest or makes a signal. If he makes a signal, we begin."
When he was caught earlier, the security officers had let him off with a warning.
The officers said they could not remember when was the last time they caught him because there have been many similar cases.
This was confirmed by shopkeepers in the complex.
One of them, who gave his name only as Mr Tan, told The New Paper that complaints have often been made about the activity in the toilets, especially those on the second and third storeys.
This has been going on for about six years, he said.
Despite some arrests, the people involved would keep coming back.
He said there had been suggestions to replace the wooden toilet partitions on the two levels with metal ones as on the first level.
The Golden Mile Complex management declined to comment on this.
All sorts of characters
A shopkeeper on the second level, who asked not to be identified, said in Mandarin: "All sorts of characters hang out here - drug users, homosexuals, drunks, prostitutes.
"I use the toilets, but I don't hang around. Sometimes, I notice that people linger in the toilets for hours. I find it very disgusting."
He felt that the large number of foreigners in the complex made it easier for shady characters to carry out their illicit activities.
"They probably pick this place to carry out their activities because most of the establishments here are operated by Thais," he said.
"The Thais here generally don't bother you, unlike locals who will complain immediately if they see anything unusual."
Police confirmed that they received a call for assistance at Golden Mile Complex around 5.30pm on Friday. A man was arrested on suspicion of committing an indecent act. Investigating are continuing.
Such an act committed between two men, whether in public or private, is in violation of Section 377A of the Penal Code. It is punishable by up to two years in jail.
