Man arrested for alleged involvement in abalone thefts
by Hetty Musfirah Abdul Khamid 05:55 AM Jan 17, 2011SINGAPORE - Cases of abalone theft have been reported at supermarkets islandwide since December, the police said yesterday.

A 45-year-old man has now been arrested for alleged involvement in this series of thefts in Ang Mo Kio, Bukit Panjang, Hougang, Toa Payoh and Woodlands.

A task force from Jurong Police Division identified the suspect from closed-circuit television recordings and alerted security officers at various supermarkets to be on the lookout for him.

A tip-off came on Saturday afternoon that he was in a supermarket at Ang Mo Kio Street 32. The suspect was caught red-handed, with three cans of abalone believed to be stolen. He will be charged today and the police intend to keep him in remand.

If convicted, he can be jailed up to seven years and fined. HETTY MUSFIRAH
