Man accused of causing mother's death escapes gallows
SINGAPORE: A man who was initially charged with the murder of his mother has escaped the gallows after the prosecution reduced the charge to culpable homicide.
Culpable homicide carries either life imprisonment and caning, or up to 20 years' jail and a fine or caning.
32-year-old Sujay Solomon Sutherson is now accused of causing the death of 56-year-old Madam Mallika Jesudasan by stabbing her multiple times at the family flat in Bukit Batok East Avenue 5.
The incident allegedly took place on the night of May 27, 2012.
The prosecution on Wednesday told the court that Sutherson needs to undergo psychiatric re-assessment to see if he is of sound mind.
The case will be mentioned next in late October. - CNA/ac
