An 87-year old man living alone in his Aljunied Crescent flat fell and got his head trapped between water pipes in his bathroom at home.
He was only rescued the next day, 18 hours later, when a friend, who had been unable to contact him, went to his home.
Head trapped between pipes
According to Shin Min Daily News, the incident occurred on Nov. 27 at around 10pm.Even though he was a wheelchair user, the man, surnamed Wu, was typically able to take care of himself at home.
However, after falling headfirst into the gap between the water pipes, he was unable to get up, and he eventually became too weak to move.
Rescued by a former neighbour
Wu was found by a friend and former neighbour, surnamed Li, who usually visited Wu at his flat two to three days a week and had a key to his house. On the day after the fall, Li was unable to contact Wu on the phone despite calling him multiple times.
By mid-afternoon on Nov. 28, he sensed something amiss and headed down to the flat, where he found the house empty and Wu lying on the ground in the bathroom with his head still stuck between the water pipes.
According to Li, Wu was bleeding profusely from his right ear, was in a semi-comatose state and unable to open his eyes.
There were also bloodstains on the pipes and tiles in the bathroom.
Li called the ambulance after rendering first aid, and removing his head from the pipes.
He also reportedly kept a conversation going with Wu in the process.
In response to Mothership's queries, the Singapore Civil Defence Force said they received a call for assistance at Block 96 Aljunied Crescent on Nov. 28 at about 3:50pm.
One person was conveyed to Changi General Hospital.
Upon receiving treatment in the hospital, Wu was reportedly in a stable condition and out of danger.
