Man, 51, arrested for stealing from the elderly

SINGAPORE - A 51-year-old man has been arrested for alleged involvement in two cases of snatch theft committed within the same day.
On Sep 25, at around 10am, a 68-year-old woman reported that an unknown man had snatched her purse earlier that morning at 7.10am.
The female victim was walking along Upper Cross Street when a cyclist grabbed her purse before riding away in the direction towards Chinatown.
The purse contained $30 in case and her Senior Citizen EZ-link card.
In another case, a 73-year-old woman was targeted and had her purse snatched by a man on a bicycle while she was walking alone along Chin Swee Road.
She had $360 in cash and her EZ-link card taken away from her.
Crime Strike Force officers from Bukit Merah East NPC and Investigation Officers from the Central Police Division mounted an operation immediately.
After combing Chinatown and its vicinity, officers spotted a male cyclist along Eu Tong Sen Street on Sep 25, at around 1.45pm.
They conducted a check on him and found the purse of the 68-year-old victim from the first incident.
A mobile phone found in his possession turned out to be reported stolen along Smith Street on Sep 25, at 12pm.
The items were seized as case exhibits.
The suspect will appear in court on Sep 26. If convicted, he will face a jail term up to seven years and shall be liable to caning.
