SINGAPORE - Police officers arrested a 22-year-old man in the vicinity of Choa Chu Kang Street 53 for suspected involvement in loanshark harassment activities on June 20 at about 4 pm.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is a debtor who is believed to be responsible for several cases of loanshark harassment in the Choa Chu Kang and Jurong West area by splashing paint on debtors' residences and scrawling loanshark-related graffiti on the walls.

Upon his arrest, loanshark-related paraphernalia including three cans of paint, one paint brush and one mobile phone containing debtors' information were seized as case exhibits.

The suspect will be charged in Court on June 22. Under the Moneylenders' Act (Revised Edition 2010), first-time offenders found guilty of acting on behalf of an unlicensed moneylender, committing or attempting to commit any acts of harassment shall be punished with imprisonment for a term not exceeding 5 years, a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000, and shall also be liable to caning of not less than 3 and not more than 6 strokes.

Commander of Jurong Police Division Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police Wilson Lim commended his officers for their prompt response to the case leading to the arrest of the suspect.

He said the police are determined to crack down loanshark syndicates and will not hesitate to bring those involved to justice.
