We are Singaporeans who would like to show support to our Malaysian friends in their call for fair elections in their country. The quest for justice and human rights is a universal one and the desire for democracy and fair elections are shared by Singaporeans too. If you would like to show and voice your support for our Malaysian brothers and sisters, please join us at this event. We welcome speakers, placards, art etc as an expression of your solidarity. Please come dressed in a black top. Foreigners including Malaysians are welcome to join us as observers only.

While discussiing with a Malaysian friend over coffee...my assertion of BN using the massive election fraud to win power in Msia was carefully explain by this friend who provide some account of Anwar and his mobilisation of the chinese in Msia . I might not share all her thoughts but some make sense.
According to her, Anwar was a fiery former Islamic leader of a few Islamic youth organisations before he joined UMNO.During his term as education minister, he introduced many pro-Malay policies which made the chinese, esp her family feel uneasy. With UMNO itself, esp with Mahathir, Anwar was more religious than the others and in fact many worried what Anwar will do to Malaysia when he was DPM.
During the Reformasi period after his fallout with UMNO, his supporters were mostly Malays and some hardliner Muslims Malaysians. while her Malay friends joined in the protest, the chinese did not . Anwar realised that he need to aroused support from the chinese Msians who consituted some 23% of the total population with a separated cultural identity and quietly unhappy with UMNO's corruption and Bumiputra policy. By partnering with the chinese DAP, he can aroused enough chinese support to prevent BN from getting enough support for a 2/3 majority in parliament and combined with dissatisfied Malays in his PKR and religious Muslims from Parti Islam, his chance of grabbing power is real. In fact Anwar was full of confident of defeating the BN government in 2013 and becoming the next Prime Minister of Malaysia. The Chinese, who were always careful and wary ,rather strangely now believes Anwar wholeheartedly.
Anwar was a very capable and effective leader, charismatic and very persuasive. He knew how to play along the various races esp the chinese and is politically very shrewd. During the GE day itself, he twitted that his opposition has won even before counting starts and warned BN against "dirty tricks". This was calculated to prepare n provide ammunition when he failed to win the election by stating the BN as rigging the election through fraud. In a way, he knew he could not win and has earlier promised to resign. So his earlier twit is a sauvy political move to enable him to continue his fight to get power , arouse the masses of the fraud as he has earlier warned and continue his fight agaisnt BN.
The issue of Anwar and BN is actually an issue between the people inisde UMNO. In fact this is a domestic issue of the Malay political class which has nothing to do with the chinese and Indian minorities. The Indians were also earlier up in arms over controversial policies and remarks by extremist Malay politicans esp over the Hindu religion but many were pacify by PM Najib sincerirty over his policies for the Indians malaysians. The Chinese however were not satisfy with PM Najib despite him being the friendliest Msian PM to the chinese community. Anwar's call for the chinese to defeat the BN gather so much momentum that the MCA and Gerakan lost almost all their fight.
Despite achieving overwhelming victory for the DAP, the Chinese continues to heed calls by Anwar to continue the fight against the BN alleged election fraud..in which some Anwar own PRK malay leaders even did not attended. The rallies although multi-racial saw the biggest chinese participation vs the othe,s esp the malays. Smaller rallies in ipoh, Penang were also overwhelming chinese. It seems Anwar was able to use the chinese fully to achieve his political objectives, even though his aim of becoming Prime Minister in Malaysia seems still distant.
Maybe he knew the malays in PRK and PAS were not as enthuiast as the chinese for real political change in Malaysia. However, his mobilisation of the chinese against the malay BN govt might have long term implication for the chinese community in Malaysia , the first being possibly no chinese minister in the new malaysian government.
The Chinese backed BN for half a century, and see where they are now? All the top young Chinese are working overseas, leaving behind the old parents and those who can't make it. The policy of BN is to passively ignore the Chinese and diverting resources to their own cronies.which explains why the chinese are strongly active in the demos....
its all or nothing... they risk getting nothing now, for backing the wrong horse.

Anwar, Juliet Chin and Tan Wah Piow joined forces in the 70s to fight for the poor Malays who were mainly squatters. It was not about Islam. The protest were held in Johor. Singapore University students were with Anwar then over social issues with politics coming secondary. You may want to update your friend.
Mr SB, if I'm not wrong, the Malays are not badly treated like those blacks during the Apartheid times of South Africa.
It's their own damned fault for trying to be Chinese first and Malaysians second. They deserve whatever hand they are dealt.
The Thai Chinese face no problems whatsoever from the native Thais because they have integrated into Thai society.
