Slain cameraman laid to rest

KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 4, 2011): BernamaTV cameraman Noramfaizul Mohd Nor, shot dead on Friday while covering a Malaysian humanitarian aid mission in famine-hit Somalia, was buried today at the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) cemetery in Serdang near here.

The burial ceremony was attended by members of Noramfaizul's family, friends and fellow journalists, including executives and staff of BernamaTV and the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama).

Information, Communications and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim, former information minister Tan Sri Zainuddin Maidin, Seputeh MP Teresa Kok, Seri Kembangan state assemblyman Ean Yong Hian Wah and Putera 1Malaysia Club president Datuk Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim also attended the ceremony.

Among the Bernama executives present were chairman Datuk Abdul Rahman Sulaiman, general manager Datuk Hasnul Hassan and editor-in-chief Datuk Yong Soo Heong.

Noramfaizul, 39, was killed on Friday after he was shot while travelling in a four-wheel-drive vehicle with other Malaysian media personnel covering the humanitarian aid mission to Somalia by the Putera 1Malaysia Club.

Noramfaizul's remains were flown in to the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) base in Subang at about 10 am in an RMAF C-130 aircraft which also brought back the remaining 54 members of the aid mission.

The cameraman's parents, Mohd Nor Mat Yassin, 66, and Naemah Abd Majid, 63, as well other family members were at the airbase to receive the body.

Also present were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and his wife Puan Sri Norainee Abdul Rahman and several cabinet ministers.

The coffin, draped in the Malaysian flag, was taken to the RMAF mosque for prayers, and the lid was opened to enable the family members and others to have a final look at Noramfaizul.

Naemah shed tears as she took a close look at her only son, the eldest of six siblings, for the last time. -- Bernama
