New system will take specialists less time to be promoted to one of the highest levels of salary scales.
MUAR, MALAYSIA -Various measures are being taken to prevent medical students in local universities from seeking jobs in Singapore.
"We don't want our universities to be the training ground for medical officers for Singapore," Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai told reporters after launching the Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital new CT scan unit yesterday.
He said the Government had announced a new system where all specialists needed to serve only nine years before they could be promoted to the U54 salary scale.
Prior to this, specialists needed to work for 20 years to get to the U54 scale, which was among the highest in government service.
He said doctors needed to serve 12 years before they could be promoted to U54, adding that he hoped the new salary scale would discourage them from leaving the country.
Liow also said that the ministry would recruit more foreign doctors, especially medical specialists, to fill vacancies and serve hospitals throughout the country.
He said presently, there was a shortage as only about 50 PER CENT of the nation's need for specialist doctors was filled, adding that the ministry was working with Egypt, India, Pakistan and several other countries to obtain contract doctors.
On the Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital, Liow said the ministry planned to send more medical specialists and build a four-storey specialist clinic to serve the people.
