Actually Ron95 is an overkill for most of these cheap Malaysian made Protons and Peroduas, etc. The Malaysian car market is dominated by cheap local build cars and cheap foreign CKD cars. These old Protons don't need RON95. They will function perfectly fine on RON93 -94 which is what they are designed for in the first place. In many parts of the world using the AKI method, RON 93-94 is AKI 89 which is the lowest grade sold in many countries. RON 95 is equivalent to AKI 91 which is a premium petrol in many countries. Except that in Malaysia, it's the cheapest petrol. Modern cars and engines function perfectly on RON 93. The Malaysian govt should allow the sale of RON 93 and the cheaper price alone will move car owners with cheap cars to this type of petrol. No need for subsidies. The price of a RON 93 petrol should be the same or cheaper then a subsidised RON95. if they want to make it even cheaper, petrol companies can sell it without additives.
