Malaysia most peaceful in S-E Asia

The report doesn't even state where S'pore lies.
So is it because of the FTs coming here that we are less peaceful and safe already?
Hmmm... maybe the report factored in the 7-8 bodies found recently?

What say you??

Malaysia has been ranked the most peaceful country in South-East Asia and the fourth safest in the Asia-Pacific behind New Zealand, Japan and Australia.

It is also the 19th safest and peaceful out of 153 countries in the world.

The ranking by Global Peace Index (GPI) is the first time that Malaysia has been placed that high since 2007.

It is also one of the six non-European nations making the top 20 list. The other five are Iceland, New Zealand, Japan, Qatar and Australia.

The findings were published in the fifth edition of the survey by the Sydney-based Institute for Economics and Peace.

In 2007, Malaysia was ranked 37th. It fell to the 38th place in 2008 but improved in the next three years from 26th in 2009 to 22nd last year and moved up to 19th now.

The index contains 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators, combining factors such as military expenditure, relations with neighbouring countries and the level of respect for human rights.

These indicators were selected by an international panel of academicians, businessmen, philanthropists and members of peace organisations in the past one year.

“Malaysia's growing peacefulness reflected a rise in political stability and improving relations with neighbouring countries, notably Singapore and China,” it said.

The top 10 placements were Iceland as the most peaceful country, followed by New Zealand, Japan, Denmark, Czech Republic, Austria, Finland, Canada, Norway and Slovenia.

The survey said that war-torn Somalia dropped one spot to replace Iraq as the country ranked least at peace.

Political scientist Prof Dr Ahmad Atory Hussain said Malaysians should recognise such rankings as it was internationally conducted and respected.

“We should strive for an even higher target now. Perhaps by 2020 we should be in the top 10,” he said. - Bernama

The recent bodies found in quick succession probably have something to do with Singapore's ranking.

Can check the methodology here.

If U we probably rank low due to point number 16/17/21/23 which proportionally speaking our military capabilities are way above Matland(more due to lack of funding then actually wanting peave). However, everything else we should be ahead of Matland. Which I seriously can't understand how we are below them

The ranking was probably done before the Bersih event.

I have my reservations regarding our military capability vs Matland. Yes, we have technically superior weapons but as US in Afghanistan shows, its not the weaponery that wins the war, its the morale and the fighters.

All these rankings can be paid for. I remember once KLIA was ranked no 1 and Changi was ranked no 3 in the same survey.

There are products which showed that they have won medals in competitions. In actual effect, the championship was bought. The same goes for the Oscars.

Mudland soldiers along with other UN peacekeeping forces assisted the US army in that infamous Battle of Mogadishu against the Somalian rebels way back in 1993.. The Malaysia's regiment involved suffered one casualty and had few of their men injured.. That battle was made into a Hollywood film titled ''Black Hawk Down''.. At least they had seen real war action... Our SAF soldiers leh..???

Any news report that is not published via our trusted Straits Times or CNA are biased, non-objective, skewed and threatening.

Hence I will view this report with a big pinch of salt and pepper. :D

we went patrolling off shores of Somalia for pirates.

seriously, we have better weapons & better training. The only question is whether we are complacent and our morale.

Singapore is rank low because of million dollar salaried Ministers' make belief publicity of the ever presence threat of terrorism in Singapore and their claims to have foiled this bomb plots that bomb plots.

Spore has many poor from the 3rd world & at the same time it is one of the most expensive places in the world. Even the rich from these 3rd world places are well known for being crooks:eek:

Not a good recipe for crime or happiness:(
