Just a gimmick.

They are hoping to divert public attention away from the growing disaffection. In a way, it's a good attempt even if they fail.

Because they may inspire some youth to venture into STEM disciplines. Israel launched the moon mission the other day with precisely that purpose.

The idea is to do sth that capture's people's imagination, makes them discuss about science or tech. And hope there is a trickle down effect whereby some youngsters pursue their passion in STEM disciplines.
