Jais has no right to raid Bible Society of Malaysia premises, says Council of Churches

JANUARY 02, 2014
LATEST UPDATE: JANUARY 02, 2014 05:53 PM

The Selangor Islamic authorities do not have the authority to raid the premises of the Bible Society of Malaysia (BSM), said the Council of Churches of Malaysia (CCM).

Saying they were alarmed by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department's (Jais) raid today on BSM where they confiscated over 300 Bibles in Malay and Iban, CCM general-secretary Rev Dr Hermen Shastri said that the Federal Constitution guaranteed the right of religious communities in the country to freely profess and administer their affairs.

"The Prime Minister, Selangor Menteri Besar and all Christian lawmakers should act immediately to stop such actions and further raids," he said in a statement issued more than two hours after the controversial raid.

He said the CCM believes that Islamic authorities do not have the authority in law to enter the premises of non-Muslim religious establishments for inspection, search or raid.

He also called on the churches to stay calm and pray that the rightful authorities would act with wisdom and sensitivity to protect the religious rights of all.

Christians make up about 9% of the Malaysian population, or 2.6 million. Almost two-thirds of them are Bumiputera and are largely based in Sabah and Sarawak, where they routinely use Bahasa Malaysia and indigenous languages in their religious practices, including describing God as Allah in their prayers and holy book.

Besides the Bumiputera Christians from East Malaysia, some of whom have moved to the peninsula to live and work, Orang Asli Christians in the peninsula also typically use Bahasa Malaysia in their worship.

The Bible Society of Malaysia (BSM) president Lee Min Choon, who was detained and taken to the police station today, called on the Christian community to remain calm following the raid.

A team of officers from Jais and two policemen went to the BSM offices in Damansara Kim, in Selangor, today at 1pm and carted away some 300 copies of the Bible in Bahasa Malaysia and Iban.

"The team wanted to enter the premises but my staff asked them to show their authorisation cards and search warrant, which they failed to produce," Lee said at the Damansara police station.

Lee and BSM manager Sinclair Wong were taken to the Damansara police station by Jais along with the Bibles. Jais lodged a police report over the raid.

Lee and Wong were released on police bail at 4pm, but have not been told whether they will face further action............

Today’s raid comes after the editor of Catholic weekly, Herald, Rev Father Lawrence Andrew said that Catholic churches in Selangor would continue to use the word “Allah” in their weekend services in Bahasa Malaysia, which are primarily attended by Sabah and Sarawak folk.

======================

Is some hidden hand trying to create problems for PM Najib, so that he can take over as PM?......

Watch out for Najib's number 2............he may be too impatient to take over.....

Hope our leaders are not sleeping but watching..........:eek::eek:

Again and again, we see Muslims at the center of all trouble making. They don't respect other religions and yet demand others to respect theirs. They are a dangerous cult religion and it's time to recognise this truth.

MALAY GROUPS TO PROTEST AT KLANG CHURCH, THREATEN ‘UPRISING’ OVER ‘ALLAH’
January 2, 2014

A rally will be held at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes in Klang this Sunday morning over the insistence of Christians in the state to use the word ‘Allah’, a coalition of Malay-Muslim groups announced today.

The coalition calling themselves the Klang Muslims Solidarity Secretariat blamed church leaders for sparking the current row over the Arabic word and threatened an “uprising” if their demand to stop non-Muslims from using it is ignored.

“We will not conspire and give permission to any churches to use the word ‘Allah’, and this includes other non-Muslims as well,” the secretariat’s president, Mohd Khairi Hussin told reporters here.

Mohd Khairi, who is also the Kapar Umno religious bureau chief, pointed out that the relationship between Muslims and Christians in the country had been cordial before church leaders allegedly challenged to use the word in their worship.

The rally is expected to draw Muslims from around the Klang area, and participants will gather at 9am before marching towards the 85-year-old Catholic church to deliver a memorandum expressing their dissatisfaction.

The plan comes following Umno Selangor’s threat to protest outside all churches in Selangor this Sunday unless a senior Catholic priest apologises over his remark insisting on the religion’s use of “Allah”.

Gombak Umno head Abdul Rahim Kamarudin said that Father Lawrence Andrew, editor of the Catholic Church’s weekly paper, The Herald, has until Saturday to withdraw his statement.

The secretariat confirmed today that another protest will happen simultaneously at the Metro Tabernacle Church in Taman Samudera, Gombak on Sunday, followed by similar protests around Selangor in the days after.

These bigots has the support of the Sultan and UMNO. As Muslims are the majority therefore "might is right." Hopefully good sense will prevail and with more support of Christians in Sabah and Sarawak, their lobbying for the right to use the word "Allah" can be stronger. Let's see what unfolds in the coming days.

Re: Malaysia - Idiots stir Religious Hornets Nest yet again.... to discredit PM Najib

Actually, this is UMNO trying to discredit Selangor state managed by the opposition.
JAIS is jabatan Agama islam Selangor.
Nobody in the state adminstration knew about the raid.
Its all about the malay muslim votes and both UMNO and PAS are battling on his front.
Let us see how the state adminsitration handle this. there was a law enacted prohibiting usage of certain arabic words by non musims passed by the state assembly when UMNO was in power.
If the opposition erase the law, then they may provoke malay muslim wrath and lose votes, or the may gain even more support for allowing bumiputra christians the use of arabic term for god in their bible. Its all politics.

Re: Malaysia - Idiots stir Religious Hornets Nest yet again.... to discredit PM Najib

Some extreme malay muslim NGO actually got their funding from the federal government. This is so that they can be unleash to do their dirty job on behalf of UMNO, who then looks radically moderate by comparison. So I am not surprise that there will be demonstration at a church in the state of selangor as it is UMNO's priority to win over the state in the next election. There are more malays seats in selangor than there are non malay ones.

This is why Singapore needs to spend big on defense weaponry. Otherwise it will be a sitting duck when the fundamentalists gain power.

It is also the reason why Singaporeans need to give their wholehearted support for the PAP so the country can stand united against a common enemy.

Re: Malaysia - Idiots stir Religious Hornets Nest yet again.... to discredit PM Najib

Fucking Christians should be grateful they are allowed to practice their religion in a Muslim country.
In my memory it was illegal to preach Christianity to a muslim in Malaysia. Why print a bible in Malay in the first case?

I don't know how to make these people a bit smarter - i guess if you are born stupid it cannot be changed. Let the Malays in Malaysia bask in the ego of their self-perceived "superior" culture of wayang kulit, their Allah, their silat... just go and make the bloody money in a country with so much opportunities of making money!

They don't have to look very far. Just look at Indonesia where Chinese form barely 5% of the population. Without giving a fucking damn to these trivial things, they adopt their Widjojo or Salim or be it Hartono kind of names... but they made tons of money enough to sink Singapore!

What can I say, a group of them is obviously an idiot...

PETALING JAYA - Enforcement officers from the Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (Jais) and the police seized about 350 copies of Christian publications from the premises of the Bible Society of Malaysia in Damansara Kim here.

They include copies of the Bible in Bahasa Malaysia, or Al-Kitab (310) and the Iban language, also known as Bup Kudus (10).

The Jais officers also carried away 20 copies of Luke's Gospel in Bahasa Malaysia.

It is believed the raid pertained to the Non-Islamic Religions (Control of Propagation Among Muslims) Enactment 1988 that prohibited the use of the "kalimah Allah" and other Quranic terms by non-Muslims.

Society president Lee Min Choon and office manager Sinclair Wong were brought to the Damansara Utama police station where their statements were recorded. They left after 90 minutes.

Lee said they were directed to see Jais on Jan 10, adding that the department was believed to have acted under the 1988 enactment.

Appealing for calm, he called on the Federal government to step in to resolve the issue.

He said the Bibles taken by Jais had the crucifix symbol and the words "Christian Publication" printed on the covers, as required under a 10-point Government agreement in 2010 on the printing, import and distribution of the Bahasa Malaysia version of the Bible in peninsular Malaysia.

"We hope the Federal Government will liaise with Jais to resolve this," said Lee, adding that the authorities were aware of the existence of these Bibles.

He said over the years, the society had been in direct contact with the Government, including Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Idris Jala.

"The Bibles were imported and vetted by the Home Ministry before they were released to us," said Lee, adding that Malay-speaking Christians should be allowed to read their scriptures in the language.

Bible Society of Malaysia executive council member Nic Ng said their premises was closed for stock taking when the enforcement officers arrived yesterday.

Ng said the staff initially did not allow the officers to enter the premises because they did not have a warrant.

"My staff called me and I also told Jais had no jurisdiction over us," he said, adding that Lee relented as they did not want the officers to force their way into the premises. After a brief standoff, five officers went in.

Jais director Ahmad Zaharin Mohd Saad said the raid followed an investigation on the society.

"I ask for all parties to give Jais and the police the opportunity and space to carry out further investigations.

"There will not be any more comment," he said, adding that Jais would issue a statement only if necessary.

"This issue need not be politicised nor blown out of proportion," said Ahmad Zaharin, who had stated last week that he would be issuing letters to all churches in Selangor to remind them of the enactment.

That is idiotic as their National Language is Bahasa Melayu. Not only some Chinese are Christians but most natives in Sabah and Sarawak are Christians.

I am an atheist so I am not biased in the Christian-Muslim ding dong.

My take on this issue is, if Christian countries like US, Europe and UK allow Muslims to practice Islam freely on their soil why can't Malaysia and other Muslim countries reciprocate?

As for the printing of Bibles in Malay, blame it on Malaysia's education system which compels all students to learn Malay as first language and English as second language. The result is many students are weak in English, Chinese and Tamil but conversant in Malay. So Bibles are printed in Malay to cater for them. How will Muslims react if Christian countries ban the printing of Koran in English?

Islam is in the middle of these trouble. Even young girls will turn into mindless killing monster when they follow the Koran. Just watch the short documentary below and no one in the right mind won't see how dangerous Islam is to world peace.
