Islam places religion above economy in disaster management

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang today said any decisions made in managing a disaster should place religion above other matters including to preserve economic interests.

Hadi in a blog post said Islamic scholars have listed six pillars of life in order of priority, with religion at the top and wealth in the last place.

The remaining four pillars, which he said should serve as guidance in order of priority are life, intellect, lineage and dignity.

“Islam places the economy as one of life’s pillars, but in the last place.

“This is so because of the Islamic concept that mankind is created to serve, carry out its teachings, go forth with what has been entrusted on earth and the afterlife,” said the Marang MP.

“Therefore, the economic aspect is a supporting thrust for other life’s roles, or in other words, mankind ‘eats to live’ and carry out duties set out by Allah SWT.

“And so life is not only to fulfill earthly desires without consideration for the wisdom of its creations,” he said, adding that the ways of Islam also differs from modern ideologies that places wealth and amassing wealth as a primary life goal.

Hadi said such consideration applies in any disaster management including the current Covid-19 pandemic where the Perikatan Nasional government were faced with decisions which must be made according to the set priorities.

“But if everything can be managed together, then it must be done systematically.

“This include combining the priorities to preserve economic activities in order to fulfill the need of protecting livelihoods,” he said, citing permission granted in Islam for consumption of non-permissible food to sustain life.

He said the PN government has taken steps to control the Covid-19 pandemic without shutting down the economy in order to protect people's livelihoods while providing help to the most needy.

“Only those whose work is to find blame and weaknesses will pick on the restrictions’ list without consideration for the people’s need for economic activities to go on,” he added.

PAS President Abdul Hadi Awang harshly criticized Saudi Arabia, the Arab states that have implemented normalization against Israel and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) following the latest conflict between Israel and the Palestinian armed forces.
The prime minister's special envoy to the Middle East also described the OIC as lifeless and merely acting as a club organizing forums.
“The OIC should play a role with the duty to unite Muslims and build their strength in all fields.
"However, they are just a club to have a forum by issuing resolutions that follow the instructions of the real and unseen hands," said the minister's ambassador.

After an 11 -day conflict that killed nearly 250 people, Israel and the Palestinian armed group Hamas yesterday agreed to a ceasefire, with Egypt as mediator.
In his statement today, Hadi also claimed that religious institutions in Saudi Arabia were also used while his clerics were pressured.
“The Zionists, shocked by the resurgence of Islam, failed to impress the Muslims with the sermons that were arranged so that the pulpits of the mosques in Makkah and Madinah were also used.
"Imams and clerics who do not comply with the order will be blocked or detained, some of them today are still languishing in detention, including Hamas representatives who are seriously ill," he said.

Hadi said Israel was now becoming bolder because the country had arms supplies and there were diplomatic efforts to persuade Arab countries to implement normalization of Israel in a "two-faced manner".
“The matter is still happening, even though the Arab countries are said to have achieved independence which has been repeated dozens of times as the national day of their respective countries.
"At the same time, the Arab countries use the word terrorist according to the history of the Zionist state," he said.
In this regard, Hadi specifically demanded that Saudi Arabia play a direct role in this issue.

"For countries that normalize Israel, they should all return to the basics.
"This call is specifically addressed to Saudi Arabia, which holds the title of khadam of the two forbidden lands (holy land), to free the imams of the mosques in Makkah, including the scholars, scientists and community leaders who dare to speak for the truth," he said.

Hadi also claimed that several Hamas leaders who took refuge in Saudi Arabia were also arrested.

He said they included an 80 -year -old individual who was seriously ill with cancer.
"What has been done by the Saudi Arabian government is a cruel act that has tarnished the face of the country which is called the servant of two illegal lands," he said.
