SINGAPORE — President Halimah Yacob has urged all Singaporeans to get vaccinated against COVID-19 in her Chinese New Year message on Wednesday (12 February).
She said during a two-minute video clip posted on her Facebook page that the Republic is entering the Year of the Ox with a greater sense of hope and optimism, as it has the vaccine to combat the coronavirus.
“However, having the vaccine is only one part of the equation. What is of equal importance is to make sure that everyone is vaccinated,” she said in the video clip.
“The response has been encouraging, but we can do even better. So please get vaccinated, to protect yourselves and your loved ones.”
Continue practising safe distancing
President Halimah also urged all to continue practising safe distancing, as it will take some time for Singaporeans to develop immunity against COVID-19.
“The faster we resolve this health crisis, the quicker we will recover economically. Everyone has a part to play,” she said.
She added that she empathised with Chinese Singaporeans who are finding it difficult to celebrate the upcoming Chinese New Year, with all the restrictions to observe due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Some of the safe-distancing measures implementedfor this festive period include: receiving a maximum of eight distinct visitors per day, not shouting auspicious phrase during lohei (tossing of raw fish salad), and having reunion dinners on separate tables.
“I hope that you will still be able to spend time meaningfully with your loved ones,” said President Halimah.
