A WOMAN who abused her Indonesian maid four times within four days was sentenced to six weeks' jail on Thursday. Juliana Ayob, 34, a property agent and a former designer, was also ordered to pay $1,500 compensation to the maid, Ms Biyanti Marsono, 31. She is appealing against conviction and sentence. Earlier this week, District Judge Kamala Ponnampalam had found her guilty of assaulting the maid between Jan 3 and 6 last year at her flat in Bukit Merah Central.

The maid started work at the household on Dec 30, 2008. Four days into her job, Juliana scolded her for alleged poor cooking. Juliana then slapped her, pinched her arm and pulled her ears. She also used a wooden ladle to hit her nose twice, and there was blood the second time. Later that day she kicked the maid on the right knee for preparing drinks that was too sweet.

Ms Biyanti was abused again the next day. On Jan 6 when Juliana twisted and pulled her ear and hit the back of her neck with a book, she fled. She had wanted to meet her agent but ended up at Safra Club at Telok Blangah Way where she sought help. Juliana could have been jailed for up to three years and/or fined up to $7,500 on each charge.
