Dr Mahathir: Are Bersatu leaders ok with 'thieves' as allies? What about the fight to save Malays from kleptocrats? | Malay Mail

KUALA LUMPUR, June 1 — Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today fired his latest attack against the leaders of the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) party that he had founded, questioning if they were willing to accept alleged “thieves” among political leaders as their partners for the sake of forming the new government under the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition.

While Dr Mahathir did not directly name those who he was labelling as “thieves”, he alluded to the previous Najib administration under the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition that PPBM had in the past sought to remove from power.

Dr Mahathir suggested that there were PPBM leaders that had forgotten the promise to voters in the 2018 general elections to remove allegedly corrupt leaders.

Dr Mahathir pointed out that PPBM leaders and its members previously held the purported intention of removing a “prime minister” who had allegedly stolen “billions” of government funds and had cooperated with then opposition parties under the Pakatan Harapan coalition for the same purpose, noting that voters had granted victory to the PH parties including PPBM in the 2018 elections as they trusted in the “sincerity” of the political leaders' promises.

Following the 2018 election where the BN coalition was defeated, Dr Mahathir who headed the PH coalition and PPBM as the PPBM chairman became the seventh prime minister.

In the February 2020 political crisis, the PH government collapsed after Datuk Seri Azmin Ali's faction parted ways with PKR and after PPBM pulled out from the PH coalition. Dr Mahathir quit as prime minister during the crisis, and has previously asserted that he was against PPBM's decision to withdraw from PH and form a new government under the new Perikatan Nasional coalition.

Without mincing his words against PPBM president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin who succeeded him to become Malaysia's eighth prime minister, Dr Mahathir claimed that the party president had allegedly plotted with the defeated political parties in the 2018 elections to have the PPBM party pull out from PH to trigger the PH government's collapse.

“With the support of thieving leaders, the Bersatu president became prime minister together with defeated parties given the name of Perikatan Nasional,” Dr Mahathir claimed in his blog post today. The Perikatan Nasional coalition is formed of PPBM; BN parties Umno, MCA, MIC; PAS with Gabungan Parti Sarawak as its ally.

“What say the other leaders in Bersatu? Are they willing to accept thieves as leaders? Okaylah ― as long as benefits can be enjoyed,” Dr Mahathir said sarcastically.

“What happened to the pledge in the past to fight and bring down kleptocratic leaders? Oh. That is just a pledge to get the support of voters. Now can just forget it,” he continued to say mockingly, referring to the term kleptocrats or government leaders who make themselves rich by stealing from their fellow citizens.

Dr Mahathir warned however that those who adopt such a viewpoint would risk having their parties destroyed and would also risk losing the trust of the public.

“With this Bersatu will be destroyed!! With that, what will happen to the struggle to save the Malays from kleptocrat leaders? That is Bersatu's problem. As long as can enjoy then oklah. In the future, people will no longer trust us ― is that alright?” Dr Mahathir said in his blog post in his caution to PPBM's leaders.

Dr Mahathir’s blog entry also comes just days after the PPBM party claimed that he and four other MPs had ceased to be party members, but Dr Mahathir has disputed the party sacking and challenged its validity while insisting that he is still PPBM chairman.

In his second stint as prime minister until late February 2020, Dr Mahathir had heavily stressed the need to fight corruption and had in January 2019 unveiled the country’s National Anti-Corruption Plan (NACP) 2019-2023, with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) also having then set up a portal with the names of MPs who had declared their assets and the value of their assets.

Following the 2018 elections, multiple Umno leaders including its former president Datuk Seri Najib Razak, its current president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi were brought to court to face corruption charges, with many of them undergoing trial.

Umno is now part of the new government via the Perikatan Nasional coalition.

How did Malaysia's Mahathir go from prime minister to being kicked out of his own party?

In February, Mahathir Mohamed was the prime minister of Malaysia. By last week, he not only no longer held the top job, he had been fired from his own party, Bersatu.

Key points:
Mahathir Mohamad's Pakatan Harapan coalition collapsed in February, after just 21 months
His successor, Muhyiddin Yassin, expelled Dr Mahathir and former Pakatan Harapan ministers from their party
Observers say Mr Muhyiddin's Government is illegitimate and worry about eroding civil liberties
It left Malaysia temporarily without a government — with no health minister — in the middle of a global pandemic.

But now, the 94-year-old appears to finally have been outmanoeuvred.

So, how did one of the most powerful figures in Malaysian history find himself in this position? And where is the country headed?

Why did Mahathir lose power?
Once one of the leading strongmen in South-East Asia, the enduringly popular Mahathir Mohamad rebranded himself as a moderate and banded together with former foes to contest the 2018 national election.

Dr Mahathir was personally credited with the Pakatan Harapan (Pact of Hope) coalition's victory over the Barisan Nasional coalition, which had dominated politics from the foundation of Malaysia in the 1960s.

Pakatan Harapan faced a rocky first two years in government, however, as it faced a series of scandals and struggled to implement promised reforms under its progressive manifesto.

Potential enemies loomed in Dr Mahathir's own camp.

Many in Bersatu and across its Pakatan Harapan coalition, including Dr Mahathir's former deputy and now-Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, had been members of the Barisan Nasional old guard.

Their commitment to dismantling Malaysia's longstanding race-based policies had always been questioned.

A large proportion of their ethnic Malay constituents remain in favour of preserving legal and political privileges for the country's majority Malays and Muslims over ethnic Chinese and Indians and adherents of other faiths.

"Mahathir's resignation was triggered by infighting within Bersatu," said Piya Raj Sukhani, an analyst at the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies in Singapore.

Does Muhyiddin have political legitimacy?
Unlike pragmatic Dr Mahathir, Mr Muhyiddin is a political conservative and staunch Malay nationalist.

Mr Muhyiddin convinced Malaysia's King in February he had the majority support of Malaysia's 222 parliamentarians, allowing him to take power.

But according to Khoo Ying Hooi, a lecturer in international relations at the University of Malaya, "until today, we are still in the dark as to whether Muhyiddin indeed has the majority [of] seats in the Parliament."

"This Government may not be the government that you voted for," Mr Muhyiddin said in March.

"But I want you to know that this Government cares for you."

Dr Mahathir rejects that Muhyiddin has a majority and has tabled a no-confidence vote against him.

"Muhyiddin's Government remains neither endorsed in Parliament, nor democratically mandated by the electorate," Ms Sukhani said.

But in a one-hour sitting of Parliament last month — allegedly due to concerns over coronavirus — Malaysia's King reaffirmed Dr Mahathir's successor as the Prime Minister.

No debate was allowed and media were not allowed in the chamber.

Malaysia's Parliament sits in 2008.

Then last week, Mr Muhyiddin took the extraordinary step of expelling Dr Mahathir and four of his key allies from Bersatu — the party Dr Mahathir co-founded in 2016.

The Prime Minister claimed Dr Mahathir and several former ministers had violated the party constitution.

Dr Mahathir, however, said the expulsion "was not valid" and maintained he was still Bersatu party chairman.

What will happen to Mahathir's promised reforms?
Fortune magazine in 2019, named Dr Mahathir as one of the world's 50 greatest leaders, alongside the likes of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Ireland's first openly gay leader Leo Varadkar, and FIFA's first female secretary-general Fatma Samoura.

"Mahathir and his party are now moving to protect judicial independence and press freedom, recognising that they help keep a democracy honest," it wrote.

People celebrate against the backdrop of the Malaysian flag.

Now, with Dr Mahathir gone, many worry this judicial independence and press freedom may be short-lived.

The United Nations called upon Malaysia to end an "ongoing crackdown on migrants, journalists and civil society in the context of the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic and strongly oppose xenophobia and hate speech against migrants".

"On the migrant issue alone, it has clearly shown to us that there is little commitment by this Government on the human rights front," said Dr Khoo.

Malaysia's strict lockdown, which has now been eased, was even enforced with the military.

What will happen to the 1MDB investigation?
Authorities in the US and Malaysia believe roughly $US4.5 billion was stolen from 1MDB, a sovereign wealth fund co-founded in 2009 by then-prime minister Najib Razak.

Youtube Najib Razak raid nets $370 million worth of cash, jewellery, handbags and watches
But critics believe the new government, which is allied with Mr Najib's party, will likely help him avoid prosecution for alleged major corruption.

Last month, Mr Najib's stepson Riza Aziz, who was also a producer on the film Wolf of Wall Street, had money-laundering charges against him dropped.

"Now the kleptocrats are back because the president of the [Bersatu] party, which pledged to overthrow Najib, has brought him back," Dr Mahathir wrote recently on his blog.

What next?
Dr Mahathir has vowed to oust Mr Muhyiddin at "every turn", arguing the PM only has a two-seat majority in Parliament's 222-seat Lower House.

"That is the narrowest majority any government in Malaysia ever had," Dr Mahathir said last month, stating that Mr Muhyiddin would be in "very great trouble because whatever chance we have to prove that it is not legitimate for him to be the Prime Minister, we will do that".

Youtube Malaysia's Mahathir warns of great trouble for his successor | The World
But Dr Mahathir's vote of no confidence — and indeed all parliamentary debate — will have to wait until July.

"Muhyiddin has the upper hand of incumbency. Hence, his access to power enables him to consolidate loyalty within [his coalition] to stabilise his leadership," Ms Sukhani said.

It appears Mr Muhyiddin's Government will resist calls for another national election.

"We are expected to have the next election in 2023, it is uncertain whether we will have our polls earlier in view of such strong nature of partisan politics that we have inherited," Dr Khoo said.

Progressive Malaysians will no doubt continue to push for the reinstatement of those they democratically elected in 2018.

What is certain, however — this dramatic saga isn't over.

"The King Has Not Been Pleased With Muhyiddin. He was Misled On The Race To 112" - EXCLUSIVE
"The King Has Not Been Pleased With Muhyiddin. He was Misled On The Race To 112" - EXCLUSIVE
1 June 2020
PN is a sinking vessel and many of its crew are now questioning why they were recommended to come on board, suggesting they and the Agong were deceived by “PM8″.

Sarawak Report has obtained insider insight into the “disillusionment” felt by several who followed Muhyiddin and Azmin’s ‘Sheraton Move’ in February, imagining they could make the numbers and momentum only to discover that despite blatant and illegal horse trading of posts and positions the elusive majority is still not there in parliament.

And, as the confidence slides, Sarawak Report has evidence that the numbers are secretly slipping back towards support for Harapan, as MPs who won their seats campaigning against corruption have watched with dismay PM Muhyiddin’ s unprecedented trade-offs and handouts, now humiliatingly confirmed by a recording of ‘PM8′ of him admitting his strategy in advance to fellow plotters.

“Muhyiddin made a suicidal move knowing or unknowingly. He only listens to Hamzah Zainuddin – close aide of Najib/Rosmah, ignoring others’ advice especially from “original Bersatu leaders”.

claims one influential insider. The insider confirms that the former Bersatu leader and founder Dr Mahathir’s angry pushback in recent days has shaken the confidence of several who had supported the nomination of “PM8″.

“Tun M had depended on honesty (& trust) in Muhyiddin. Dr M was cheated by Muhyiddin & Hamzah. I can see his [Mahathir’s] vengeance/anger towards Muhyiddin.. [he said] “I was backstabbed & cheated by Hmzah & Muhyiddin… ”
He WILL bring down Muhyiddin”

one former Muhyiddin supporter has told Sarawak Report.

In recent days Muhyiddin loyalists have sought to sack Mahathir from the party along with his four key allies as MPs. The veteran former prime minister has reacted trenchantly staking his position in the party’s headquarters to issue his rejection of that attempt.

With PN’s numbers at best reaching 113 in parliament – a number Muhyiddin and his backers are clearly still too fearful to test with a vote – the failure after three months to convincingly pull off their back door strategy (whilst their opponents in PH have worked to mend their own differences) has plainly startled to rattle nerves and loosen tongues.

As a result, Sarawak Report now has solid evidence that more Bersatu MPs than are claimed dispute the Muhyiddin faction, who allege at least 20 of the party’s MPs are still solidly behind ‘PM8′. The disaffected group believe their party was deliberately infiltrated by UMNO after the election as several MPs changed sides.

The key organiser behind the plotting, Sarawak Report has been told, was Hamzah Zainuddin, whom Muhyiddin has sought to install as the new Bersatu Secretary General (disputed by the Mahathir faction).

“Hamzah infiltrated into Bersatu, now elevated as Sec Gen. He brought in 12 other Umno mp’s into Bersatu”

relates one insider, indicating that at least 8 of the Bersatu MPs currently cited as loyal to Muhyiddin are not.

Listed as ‘team members’ of Hamzah’s operation by one of his detractors in Bersatu are “Dr Latiff (Mersing MP), Nadin (Muhyiddin Polsec), Ainon (Muhyiddin Media ), Dr Marzuki (Muhyiddin Senior Private Sec), Syed Amer (UMNO Youth Exco)”. Such accusations indicate a level of infighting of chaotic proportions within the tiny party that is already split across the two sides of the House of Parliament.

It is happening at a time when the ‘PM8′ has again gone into self-isolation on the grounds of quarantine amidst raging rumours that he is actually about to receive drastic chemotherapy treatment against a return of his pancreatic cancer.

Pictures released late last week designed to show a healthy prime minister at his desk have viralled on social media owing more to the hugely expensive watch spotted on his wrist. That has added to the disgust within his ranks, which he is poorly positioned now to deal with, given he has ten more days at least banned from face to face communications.

The focus on 'PM8's inexplicably expensive watch has undermined the health message intended by the picture release last week
The focus on ‘PM8’s inexplicably expensive watch has undermined the health message intended by the picture release last week

The detractors have told Sarawak Report that the plans orchestrated by the alleged UMNO infiltrators into Bersatu unfolded following the so-called Malay Dignity Conference held last October, which had been organised since August.

The conference, which was in many ways promoted as a celebration of Malay culture and unity became the nationalistic platform for a movement to unite UMNO, PAS and Bersatu in order to target, undermine and vilify the multi-racial majority parties.

There is equal suspicion in the same Bersatu quarters against the new Finance Minister, Tengku Zafrul, brought in as a non-elected official into the country’s second most important political position. They describe him as a relation of Muhyiddin and claimed he used influence at the palace to assist in misleading the King and his officials as to the numbers supporting the PN coalition during the period of the coup in February:

“[The] First attempt to [persuade the] palace was rejected by Palace.. no proof of numbers. Tun M should have been allowed to present actual SD’s of 114.. but instead gave space to Muhyiddin only … Tengku Zafrul was facilitating. A relation to Muhyiddin.
[it was] A bail out for Zafrul as PH gov didn’t want to renew his contract due non performance”

claims one Bersatu member who numbers amongst likely defectors from Muhyiddin. The same source has claimed that the palace is now fully aware that it was misled at this crucial time and that the likely majority lay with PH Mahathir who ought to have been allowed to present his numbers to the King before Muhyiddin was called to the palace and alleged he had a majority backing.

As the voice recordings now confirm, ‘PM8′ had calculated at that time on being able to make up his numbers after the event through a liberal use of old-style UMNO ‘money politics’. However, it appears Malaysia’s new-style popular parties contain enough MPs who have been prepared to put their electorate and principles in front of jumping over to the Muhyiddin ship.

The ropey, fractured nature of the coalition, full of ambitious chiefs and few Indians, combined with the fragile and uncertain health of Muhyiddin himself at a time of a national health and economic crisis has further undermined the project from the start.

Covid gave the coup an unprecedented cover and breathing space, but the conspirators have still not delivered on their promised parliamentary majority. ‘PM8′ has bitten off more than he can chew and those who took their chance with him have told Sarawak Report they now know that to be the case:

“It is fixing time. PH have reached a leadership compromise. This week and next week will be exciting”

once Bersatu source concluded.

Chin Tong: Dr Mahathir, Anwar should work together for sake of nation to oust Muhyiddin, Najib | Malay Mail

KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 — A former deputy minister has pointed out that Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad must now more than ever work together so save the nation from the current turmoil, amid worry that both are yet to mend their ties.

DAP’s Liew Chin Tong, in a statement today, pointed out the importance of the two veterans working together to avoid the country from falling under the control of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and the long-standing Barisan Nasional (BN) figure Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

“There has been much recent speculation about the relationship between Mahathir and Anwar. Will Mahathir and Anwar be able to overcome their differences?

“I believe for the sake of the nation, they will have to work together to fight against Muhyiddin, Najib and the money in his hands.

“Without Mahathir and Anwar working in unison, Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) 109 seats will be fragmented and Muhyiddin will be the biggest winner.

“Refusing to join forces is akin to giving a free passage to Muhyiddin’s rule,” Liew said in a statement today.

Liew, stressing his point, pointed out the need to go up against Muhyiddin and especially Najib, whom he alleged is looking at returning to power as chairman of BN, while undertaking a bigger plot to possibly exonerate himself from his ongoing corruption trials if he assumes power.

He said besides the two veteran politicians, Sabah’s Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal who leads Parti Warisan Sabah, will also play an integral part in ensuring PH Plus remain solid with what he suspects could be a total 130 MPs cumulatively.

According to Liew, should PH Plus remain together with Warisan, it would be able to challenge Muhyiddin claims of Parliamentary majority and apply constant pressure to his Perikatan Nasional government.

His statement today also pointed out other crucial factors related to the local political scene, one of which was the question of whether snap elections will be called this year as Muhyiddin attempts to boost his “razor-thin” majority within Parliament.

Liew claimed that should Muhyiddin fail to obtain the majority he seeks by the July 13 Parliamentary sitting, he might attempt to delay the Dewan Rakyat session even longer.

“However, the same trick can no longer be used by October as the government has to present its 2021 Budget by then. Failure by the government to pass its Budget would be considered a vote of no confidence as there will be no money for the government to spend in the coming year.

“Muhyiddin has to now start thinking whether or not to call a snap election and seek legitimacy through the ballot box,” said Liew.

He then moved on to whether PH Plus can remain as a stable coalition, saying the key to maintaining a functional relationship within the coalition is to manage each party’s differences and build trust.

Liew then questioned the position of Sarawak and its political leaders, in particular the Gabungan Parti Sarawak coalition, whom he said have lost their moral by ground by agreeing to be in cooperation with Umno despite previously detesting it.

He claimed that GPS would also look to avoid snap elections if they end up on the wrong side of the political divide, especially ahead of their state elections due in 2021, and labelled them kingmakers to either PN or PH Plus should they join forces.

The senator also stressed on the need for DAP to proclaim their stance towards national unity, and to avoid being made the bogeyman by their opponents to further intensify ethnic tensions.

He said DAP as a party recognises the importance in uniting Anwar and Dr Mahathir to end the current political uncertainty, but also urged party and coalition colleagues to remain united and be prepared in the event snap polls are called.

“Once Pakatan holds together tightly, Perikatan’s days are numbered,” he said.

Mahathir mounts legal challenge against removal from Bersatu

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, together with five other senior figures in Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), have filed a lawsuit to challenge the termination of their membership from the party.

In the lawsuit which was filed on Tuesday (Jun 9), Dr Mahathir, in his stated capacity as Bersatu’s chairman, and the other plaintiffs wanted the court to declare that Mr Muhyiddin Yassin is not the acting chairman of the party.

They said that their membership termination by Bersatu's executive secretary Muhammad Suhaimi Yahya was invalid, as the latter has no powers to remove them from the party.

They also said that Mr Muhammad Suhaimi, who was appointed by Mr Muhyiddin as executive secretary, is not recognised under the party’s constitution.

Dr Mahathir and the other plaintiffs said their action of not sitting together with the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government in the parliament should not be interpreted as them “announcing their departure from the party” or “joining another political party”.

“Articles 10.2.2 or 10.2.3 of the PPBM constitution cannot be used against us for the purpose of ‘terminating’ our memberships, because both provisions state that members who resign from the party or join another political party will have their memberships ceased,” the plaintiffs said, adding that they did not leave the party.

The plaintiffs also claimed that Mr Muhyiddin had wrongly used his powers in announcing that he was the party acting chairman on Feb 28.

On May 11, Mr Muhammad Suhaimi indicated that the dismissals were decided after the lawmakers had sat with the opposition bloc during the parliamentary sitting on May 18, and not with the PN coalition led by Mr Muhyiddin.

READ: Party memberships of Mahathir and other MPs were 'ceased' as they acted against Bersatu's constitution, says Muhyiddin
Dr Mahathir and the four other federal lawmakers who were removed from the party - Mr Mukhriz Mahathir, Mr Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman, Dr Maszlee Malik and Mr Amiruddin Hamzah - rejected their dismissals and maintained that they acted within laws and regulations set by Bersatu. All are listed as plaintiffs in Tuesday’s lawsuit.

Dr Mahathir has stressed that where he sat in parliament was not a valid reason for dismissal. He has also maintained that he was still the chairman of Bersatu.

Subsequently, Mr Marzuki Yahya, Bersatu’s secretary-general aligned to Dr Mahathir, issued a letter to terminate Mr Muhammad Suhaimi as executive secretary.

It should be noted that Mr Marzuki, who was also listed as a plaintiff in the lawsuit, had earlier been relieved of his post by Mr Muhyiddin.

Now 100 days in, Dr Mahathir accuses ‘Muhyiddin govt’ of creating posts in exchange for support | Malay Mail

KUALA LUMPUR, June 10 — Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has today accused Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s administration of offering positions in the government and government-linked companies (GLC) to Perikatan Nasional (PN) MPs in exchange for political support.

In a blog entry posted as PN marks its 100 days in government, the former prime minister even accused PN of asking such MPs which posts they wish for and later “creating” that position to be filled by the supporters.

“For the Cabinet, a lot were appointed if they accepted his offer to support him. The candidate was asked ‘what they want’ and the appointments were made.

“If there was no such post, the post would be created,” he wrote.

Dr Mahathir claimed that almost two-thirds of the MPs who support Muhyiddin have now been appointed ministers and deputy ministers.

The rest, he claimed, have been appointed as chairman of GLCs and government agencies — including those he claimed are facing criminal charges in court.

He contrasted this with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia division leaders who were sacked allegedly for not supporting him, to be replaced by those who do.

Last week, ousted party secretary-general Datuk Marzuki Yahya was fired as the Penang Bersatu chief, along with another party Supreme Council member Akhramsyah Muammar Ubaidah Sanusi.

“This is Muhyiddin’s way. Be it constitutions, laws and regulations, they are ignored.

“It is not surprising that he is willing to accept and work with robbers, bribers and crooks,” he added.

In the post, Dr Mahathir said he has no choice but to call the government of the day as the “Muhyiddin Government” instead of “PN Government” as the latter coalition does not exist.

“His friends in the coalition had also announced that they were not part of the PN coalition, but instead allowed their members to support Muhyiddin so that his wish to topple Pakatan Harapan was achieved by ensuring that the numbers of MPs were sufficient,” said Dr Mahathir.

Anwar: 107 ‘Pakatan Plus’ MPs stand united in Opposition to defend people’s mandate in corruption fight | Malay Mail

KUALA LUMPUR, June 10 — Opposition chief Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said all 107 MPs from Pakatan Harapan (PH), Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s Bersatu faction and Warisan will stay united in Opposition to defend the mandate that was given to them in the 2018 general election.

In his Facebook Live event today, Anwar commented that in a meeting that he chaired at the PKR headquarters yesterday, all of them pledged to remain united in resisting Perikatan Nasional (PN)’s “unclean” administration.

“Regardless of the strategy, the Opposition must stand firm together.

“There are currently 107 (MPs) of us in this group. We must make sure the people’s mandate is respected and that the confusion, disgrace and corruption must be stopped,” he said without elaborating further.

Yesterday, PH, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia and Parti Warisan Sabah leaders met in Petaling Jaya and said they have made “very positive” progress.

In a joint statement, the parties said any decision from the meeting will be finalised in the coming week.

“Today’s meeting saw a holistic discussion about each party’s stand and showed very positive progress.

“The process to finalise all decisions will be done within this week,” it said.

The statement was jointly signed by Anwar, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, Parti Amanah Negara president Mohamad Sabu, Bersatu’s disputed chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Warisan president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal.

In a separate statement, PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil said the meeting was chaired by Anwar and held to ascertain each party leaders’ sentiments at a time when the PH coalition appears to be on the brink of collapse.

“The meeting was to explore in detail each party’s stand currently, and the meeting was received positively by all,” Fahmi said in a statement.

It has been rumoured that Pakatan Plus — a moniker for a loose coalition that includes PH, the faction of former component Bersatu now led by Dr Mohamad and Warisan — has managed to gain the upper hand in the Dewan Rakyat, barely a few months after it lost power during the February political crisis.

However, there are still disputes within the coalition over its prime ministerial candidate, with both Dr Mahathir and Anwar’s camps said to still be at loggerheads over the matter.

Several party insiders also pointed out that Opposition Leader Anwar did not attend the meetings involving leaders of PH parties and allied parties.

Fresh leak of February Bersatu meeting suggests PM’s resignation was preplanned | Malay Mail

KUALA LUMPUR, June 11 — Yet another leak purportedly from the Bersatu supreme council meeting on February 23 contained discussions of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s resignation as the prime minister for a realignment of the ruling parties at the time.

The clip was released on social media and discussions were again dominated by a single senior Bersatu leader.

In it, the Bersatu leader was heard discussing two scenarios for the realignment and argued that neither required the prime minister to resign.

“In our proposed exercise, it means the prime minister need not resign. This has been verified. I told the prime minister after consultation with a former CJ (chief justice), ‘No, we don’t have to resign,’” the person was heard saying.

“So in Situation A now, Tun is the prime minister and even if we move to (scenario) B Tun also need not resign and remains the prime minister.”

Dr Mahathir previously asserted that he was forced to resign as the prime minister as he lost the support of Bersatu for being unwilling to accept former rival Umno “en bloc”.

The speaker also asserted that it was the monarchy’s preference that Dr Mahathir remained the PM as it was allegedly not in favour of PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s candidacy.

This is the third such leak from the same Bersatu supreme council meeting prior to the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government in February.

A previous leak featured the senior party leader telling the supreme council that the decision to leave PH should be decided by Dr Mahathir as the chairman and that he should be given a week to consider.

However, the so-called “Sheraton Move” was executed the same evening, leading to the eventual takeover of the government by the Perikatan Nasional informal coalition.

A second leak had the same speaker claiming rival lawmakers from Umno could be enticed into joining Bersatu with offers to make them federal ministers or as the heads of government-linked corporations.

Bersatu is locked in a civil war between the factions aligned with Dr Mahathir and president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

However, the party has since revoked the memberships of Dr Mahathir and leaders aligned with him for failing to support the Perikatan Nasional government that Muhyiddin headed as the prime minister.

Dr Mahathir has launched a legal challenge against the revocation.

#DemiMalaysiA campaign for Dr Mahathir, Anwar to reconcile as Pakatan decides next move today | Malay Mail

KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 — Pakatan Harapan (PH) supporters have taken to social media since yesterday to plead for Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to bury the hatchet yet again and work together against the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government.

The campaign comes as PH is expected to meet today and finalise its stance on allying with Parti Warisan Sabah and Dr Mahathir’s faction of disputed Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia members — a grouping which has been dubbed “Pakatan Plus”.

Social media users used the #DemiMalaysiA — Malay for “for the sake of Malaysia”, with the capital “M” referring to Dr Mahathir and “A” to Anwar — to ask the two to put aside their differences, as PH remains undecided on who among the two should lead Pakatan Plus and be its prime minister candidate.

Among those who joined was DAP’s former deputy defence minister Liew Chin Tong who pointed out that the cooperation between the duo is necessary to unify PH and subsequently act as a check-and-balance against the PN administration led by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

“Without Mahathir and Anwar working in unison, PH and its allies’ 109 seats will be fragmented and Muhyiddin will be the biggest winner. Refusing to join forces is akin to giving a free passage to Muhyiddin’s rule,’’ he said.

This comes as rumours on social media suggested that Pakatan Plus may have the support of up to 129 MPs should it make a move against Muhyiddin and PN. This number has been disputed by PN MPs.

Anwar has previously said PH had the support of 107 MPs, before Liew’s new number of 109 yesterday.

“With Pakatan Plus holding together, the kleptocratic coalition of Najib and Muhyiddin would have no room to manoeuvre and may crumble due to its own internal contradictions,’’ said Liew in another tweet.

Liew was referring to former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, whom many in PH including Dr Mahathir, has pointed out as the real influence behind the PN administration.

Another user @LagaCawan said both men are formidable in their own right, and must work together to return the voters’ mandate.

Meanwhile, user @_joni_joni_joni posted a photo of the duo together in their heyday back in Umno, and hoped that the spirit of deliberation and consensus remains the tenet of all PH component parties.

Malay Mail previously reported sources saying Pakatan Plus had proposed for PKR president Anwar to be the deputy prime minister under Dr Mahathir, together with another deputy in Warisan president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal.

It is believed that the proposal had two conditions: that Dr Mahathir would only be prime minister for six months, and that Anwar must command the support from Sabah and Sarawak.

PH said it would give its answer today, a week after the last public Pakatan Plus meeting at PKR headquarters.

The venue and time of the PH meeting has yet to be determined.

Prior to the fall of the PH administration, PH had agreed that the transition of power from Dr Mahathir towards Anwar should be left in the hands of the former prime minister, who has vowed that it would have been after the Apec Summit in November this year.

Ever since then, the duo have traded jabs in media interviews and public speeches.

It is believed that talks of snap polls have intensified within PN, which is also facing internal squabbles, especially between former rivals Umno and its splinter Bersatu, and has yet to decide if it will still back Muhyiddin as prime minister should a general election be called.

Why take the risk of a leader’s resignation causing political turmoil again? asks Anwar’s aide | Malay Mail

KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — Perak PKR Chief Mohd Farhash Wafa Salvador Rizal Mubarak today warned the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition to not make the same mistake when choosing the prime minister candidate again.

Referring to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s resignation last February that led to the PH government’s collapse, Farhash — who is also Anwar’s political secretary — said PH component leaders should evaluate their support for a leader who has caused political turmoil in the coalition.

“It is clear from my remarks last night that some leaders of the component parties have been stirred up (melatah).

“The fact that a PM candidate is to be agreed upon depends on the leader’s sense of responsibility. If that person has already been given the trust but he resigns as he pleases and causes the country’s political turmoil, why should we risk it again?

“I am scared, afraid of losing the people’s mandate. If this cannot be evaluated by other PH component leaders, then answer it in the 15th general election,” he said in a brief statement today.

Yesterday, Farhash expressed disappointment over the revelation that DAP agreed to Dr Mahathir becoming prime minister again if PH and its allies recaptured federal power, reminding them how Anwar had united the Opposition and risked alienating Malay support for working with the predominantly Chinese party.

“DAP and Amanah should state their stand behind the man who brought us all together.

“Is this how you repay Anwar for a friendship built over 20 years?” he said in the statement over a Malaysiakini interview with DAP organising secretary Anthony Loke yesterday that revealed only PKR still did not support Dr Mahathir as the prime minister candidate.

Earlier today, Amanah communications director Khalid Abd Samad said that Farhash should stop behaving like a coward and pretend that Dr Mahathir is the bigger enemy to PH compared to the Perikatan Nasional (PN) ruling coalition.

“Stop behaving like a coward afraid to handle a challenge.

“If you are unable to handle a weakened Tun (Mahathir), how can you handle the nation which is far more challenging than a 95-year-old man left out in the cold by his own party and ally (Azmin Ali)?

“Stop giving the impression that Mahathir is the bigger enemy while PN with Muhyiddin Yassin and Azmin are okay,” he said as reported by Malaysiakini.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — Pakatan Harapan (PH) will set another deadline this week to resolve the leadership deadlock that has stunted discussions among the Opposition parties.

A source from PKR confirmed that an emergency meeting of the Central Leadership Council (MPP) will be held tomorrow to deliberate cooperation between its president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad — with the results brought before the PH presidential council which will be convened afterwards.

“Yes, there is a call for the meeting and the result will be taken to the PH council meeting. The decision will be known this week,” said the source.

Earlier today, Malaysiakini reported that the PKR MPP will mobilise an online emergency MPP meeting via Zoom which will discuss the PH prime minister candidate choice.

This comes after organising secretary Anthony Loke, in an interview with Malaysiakini, revealed an impasse in Pakatan Plus over the coalition’s candidate for prime minister with PKR failing to make a decision as of June 16.

DAP is supporting Dr Mahathir’s bid to be prime minister again should Pakatan Plus manage to wrest back Putrajaya. This comes after it failed to convince component Warisan to nominate an Anwar Ibrahim-Mukhriz Mahathir combination for the two top positions.

Several Anwar supporters including Setiawangsa MP Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad and Perak PKR chief Farhash Wafa Salvador Rizal Mubarak had also stated last night that it is unfair for Anwar to accept a position under Dr Mahathir as the Opposition chief is the best candidate for the post.

Prior to that, PH supporters had since Monday used the hashtag #DemiMalaysiA on social media, pleading for cooperation between the two leaders in order to defeat the Perikatan Nasional government.

The campaign is a desperate attempt to appeal to both Dr Mahathir and Anwar to reconcile, as the pact faces a deadlock and the reality is it has a slim chance of regaining Putrajaya without both parties’ cooperation.

Malay Mail previously reported that several sources within the pact said that the apparent impasse between Dr Mahathir and Anwar happened due to what is believed to be a communication breakdown between the two.

Several sources have suggested that Anwar is currently seeking support to be a prime minister candidate from East Malaysian politicians on his own.

One source also told Malay Mail that Anwar spoke to Sarawak party leaders on Tuesday, and is even seeking an audience with some Malay Rulers in order to legitimise himself as the candidate.

Amid the internal tension, PH also faces the possibility of Anwar taking the 38 MPs in PKR completely out of the PH pact, that was formed after the dissolution of Pakatan Rakyat with PAS in 2015.

Why the indecision? Sources claim Dr Mahathir, Anwar ‘not talking to each other’ over PM post | Malay Mail

KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and PKR were yesterday pressured by their own Pakatan Harapan (PH) allies to decide whether they agree with an alliance again to be led by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The continued impasse of Pakatan Plus — which includes Parti Warisan Sabah and Dr Mahathir’s Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia faction — to determine its prime minister candidate is believed to be down to a communication breakdown between the two candidates.

Several sources within the pact told Malay Mail that both leaders have not communicated directly with each other since last week, after the much-publicised Pakatan Plus meeting at the PKR headquarters which sparked the deadline for the decision on Tuesday.

“Anwar was supposed to give his decision on [Tuesday], but could not get agreement with other PH parties,” one source from PKR said.

Another source confirmed that two subsequent meetings of PH and Pakatan Plus that occurred during the weekend and on Tuesday were not attended by either Anwar or Dr Mahathir.

“The suggestion for Anwar to become PM has yet to be accepted by Tun Dr Mahathir’s side as well as Parti Warisan Sabah,” said the source.

“As of now, both of the leaders are not talking directly with each other, sending their ‘messengers’ to meetings.”

Yesterday, DAP organising secretary Anthony Loke said both his party and Parti Amanah Negara are backing Dr Mahathir to become prime minister, with PKR the only party yet to do so.

Loke also said that DAP had initially agreed to a PH proposal for Anwar to be prime minister, with disputed Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir as the deputy. But the suggestion was rejected by Warisan, leading PH to return to the “fallback” plan of a Dr Mahathir-Anwar duo.

In order to finalise the decision, PH must reach a consensus. Loke said the ball is now figuratively in Anwar’s court, as PH had agreed to let him decide by Tuesday.

Anwar’s indecision ostensibly led to DAP breaking its silence on the issue on Tuesday.

Prior to that, PH supporters had since Monday used the hashtag #DemiMalaysiA on social media, pleading for the cooperation between the two leaders in order to defeat the Perikatan Nasional government.

The campaign is a desperate attempt to appeal to both Dr Mahathir and Anwar to reconcile, as the pact faces a deadlock and the reality remains that it has a slim chance of regaining Putrajaya without both parties’ cooperation.

Is Anwar canvassing support alone?

Several sources have suggested that Anwar is currently seeking support to be a prime minister candidate from East Malaysian politicians on his own.

One of the conditions for the Dr Mahathir-Anwar combination has been for Anwar to acquire a show of support from both Sabah and Sarawak.

One source also told Malay Mail that Anwar has spoken to Sarawak party leaders on Tuesday, and is even seeking audience with some Malay Rulers in order to legitimise himself as the candidate.

“Anwar will have better support if Sarawak MPs support him, and that can force Dr Mahathir’s allies to side with him as the next PM too,” said the source.

Other sources confirmed that Anwar was in Kuching earlier this week, but Malay Mail could not verify the purpose of Anwar’s visit there at the time of writing.

The stalling for now may be in order to give time for Anwar to receive backing, sources suggested.

Amid pressure from their own allies, some PKR leaders seemed to have doubled down on their position to back Anwar instead of Dr Mahathir.

Last night, PKR organising secretary Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad named Anwar as PH’s best choice for the prime minister candidate, citing a need for a “fresh start” for the country.

Nik Nazmi also denied that PH has its PM candidate decided, although Anwar had said otherwise earlier.

One source from PKR also accused Dr Mahathir’s faction of allegedly reneging on its promise before negotiations even started.

“Last week, they said six months [before power transition], this week it is one year,” said the source, claiming the latest development that happened in a secret Pakatan Plus meeting over the weekend.

“We still did not forget what happened before he and PH lost everything,” said the source, referring to Dr Mahathir’s shock resignation which ostensibly caused the fall of the PH administration.

Perak PKR chief and Anwar’s political secretary Mohd Farhash Wafa Salvador also released a statement late last night chastising DAP and Amanah for forcing Anwar’s hands, saying that both parties have not reciprocated Anwar’s two-decade “friendship” with them.

“Anwar faced many challenges and often labeled as being too liberal and distant from the Malay community for his loyalty to DAP.

“The actions and statement by DAP and Amanah for not standing firm behind Anwar is disheartening and unbecoming of a leader,” he said.

Farhash also insisted that PKR’s way forward is to never let Anwar and Malaysians “be taken for a ride ever again”.

Amid the internal tension, PH also faces the possibility of Anwar taking the 38 MPs in PKR completely out of the PH pact, that was formed after the dissolution of Pakatan Rakyat with PAS in 2015.

A PKR source admitted that the possibility was put forth in a PH meeting last week, but declined to elaborate further.

“Yes, there is an option of PKR going alone, without PH,” said the PKR source. “Time will tell.”

KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — DAP’s organising secretary Anthony Loke claimed that mechanisms have been put in place to ensure Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad resigns as the prime minister after six months, should Pakatan Harapan regain control of Putrajaya.

According to Malaysiakini, Loke conceded that there was doubt about this arrangement but went on to claim that the coalition’s parties would be able to ensure Dr Mahathir followed through this time.

“Of course, people can question if he will keep his promise. Our answer to that is six months down the road, there are mechanisms to make that happen. PKR has 38 MPs. Without them, Mahathir cannot continue to govern.

“Each party will be able to bring down the government by itself if they pull out. If the promise is not kept (by Mahathir), PKR has the option to force an election by that time,” he was quoted as saying.

He added that PH was obliged to include its allies such as Dr Mahathir in the event it could form the government as this was the voters’ decision in the 14th general election.

Loke said DAP preferred to concentrate on fixing past mistakes instead of pointing fingers following the collapse of the PH government.

“If we play the blame game, one side will blame Mahathir, his side will blame another. There will be no end to that.

“I am not saying Mahathir didn’t make any mistakes. We have told him that he resigned without consulting anybody and that caused the collapse of the (Harapan) government,” he added.

Loke also confirmed that Dr Mahathir requested to be the prime minister for six months, before handing over the position to PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“As far as DAP is concerned, we don’t look at Anwar and Mahathir as a zero-sum game. They must work together. We need the numbers to unseat Perikatan Nasional. So both leaders must work together,” he said further in the Malaysiakini report.

Loke also denied that Dr Mahathir tried to position his son, Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, in the Pakatan Plus negotiations.

“To be fair to him (Dr Mahathir), he has never taken his son’s political future as a consideration (in the discussions). He never said his son must be given positions,” Loke was quoted saying.

Loke said that PH’s discussions focused on two combinations — Anwar and Mukhriz and Dr Mahathir and Anwar — adding that Warisan president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal was never in the running.

Malaysiakini yesterday reported that Warisan had objected to the Anwar and Mukhriz combination.

In the last week or so, PH and its allies have seemingly been rejuvenated with hope that it may have turned the tide in garnering the majority in the Parliament after the Perikatan Nasional (PN) took over Putrajaya in March.

However, several sources who wished to remain unnamed have indicated that the pact has been deadlocked for days on making any counter-move, due to the inability so far to agree on who to lead this new pact called Pakatan Plus ― which includes Dr Mahathir’s faction in Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), and Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan).

PH was also originally scheduled to announce its prime minister candidate on its self-imposed deadline two days ago, but its chief secretary Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said in a statement on Tuesday evening that discussions were still ongoing.

High Court denies Dr Mahathir and co’s bid to obtain interim injunction to block removal from Bersatu | Malay Mail

KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — An application by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and the four others ousted form Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) to obtain a temporary injunction order to deem their removal from the party as unlawful was thrown out by the High Court here today.

The ad-interim injunction application, which names the ousted five including the party Bersatu itself as plaintiffs, was filed against party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, working secretary Capt (Rtd) Muhammad Suhaimi Yahya, and the Registrar of Societies.

Matters were originally supposed to be discussed in chambers, but due to social distancing regulations, proceedings were held in open court but behind closed doors; press were not allowed in.

Today’s temporary order was sought on top of an original mandatory injunction order applied for by Dr Mahathir and four others against Muhyiddin and the three other parties, while they wait for the matter to be heard in court in full which has since been fixed for July 9.

Speaking after proceedings, Haniff Khatri, representing Dr Mahathir and his camp, explained that the ad-interim order was sought to maintain the status quo within the party and for the revocation of their memberships be deemed unlawful until the matter is heard in court.

“So that no damage can be done until the matter can be heard inter parties on July 9.

“After hearing arguments from all parties including from the senior federal counsel, the court decided that the ad-interim order was a no-go.

“So we are where we were before the filing of the suit, but the hearing of the inter parties has not been disposed of yet,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Rosli Dahlan, representing Muhyiddin, explained how the court ruled that all defendants of this case need not file their reply in defence to the original suit after they submitted that they would instead be seeking to strike out the entire application.

“It’s a bad action, it is frivolous, vexatious, scandalous, and an abuse of court; so she (the judge) agreed to that and the defendants need not file our defence,” he explained, referring to High Court Judge Rohani Ismail.

Concerning the application for a temporary injunction order, Rosli explained how the court had agreed to their argument that the ad interim order was unlawful.

“So the court decided that the balance of convenience and the balance of law and principles of law does not justify that (the temporary application),” he explained.

“What has happened today is that the plaintiffs’ number through six, who claimed that they are still members of the party, did not manage to get the injunction that they sought; they cannot get the injunction yet, and they also cannot get the ad-interim order until the disposal of the matter in July,” he added.

When elaborating on their grounds they plan to submit on to strike out Dr Mahathir’s original application, Rosli explained the first matter to be addressed would be the issue of Bersatu being named as a plaintiff in the suit.

Carrying on, Rosli said that the next matter that they would address would be the irregularities contained within the affidavits of the five initiating the suit.

“The first one, from a legal point of view is to strike out Bersatu first as a plaintiff; who gave them the authority to use Bersatu’s name?

“And not only that, in a derivative action, you do not name that organisation as a plaintiff; so that itself is an abuse of the court.

Lawyer Rosli Dahlan is pictured at the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex June 18, 2020. — Picture by Ahmad Zamzahuri

“On the second part, they are saying they are still members; there is a declaration of leaving a party which can be by letter or can be by conduct.

“In their case, it’s both by letter and conduct because they wrote to the secretary of Parliament and said ‘I don’t want to sit with them’,” he said referring to the ousted five choosing to sit with the Opposition bloc during the last Parliamentary sitting on May 18.

“Then there are other irregularities, so there are irregularities of law and the irregularities of facts,” he added.

Dr Mahathir and four other MPs had on June 9 filed a lawsuit to challenge Bersatu’s termination of their memberships and effectively their leadership roles in late May, besides also seeking compensation.

In their lawsuit where they are seeking for 26 court orders, Dr Mahathir and the other affected individuals wanted the court to declare that Bersatu president Muhyiddin is not the acting chairman of the party and that Hamzah’s appointment as the party’s secretary-general is invalid, and to even have the latter two terminated as party members.

The lawsuit was filed by Dr Mahathir in his stated capacity as Bersatu chairman, with the rest who are suing named as Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir as Bersatu deputy president, Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman as Bersatu Youth chief, Maszlee Malik and Amiruddin Hamzah. All five of them insist that they are still Bersatu members despite the party’s May 28 removal of them.

“The suit launched by lawyer Haniff Khatri alleged that Dr Mahathir was unlawfully removed as chairman of Bersatu and prime minister.

“Haniff alleged various conspiracy theories by Muhyiddin to remove Dr Mahathir as chairman of the party; in Dr Mahathir’s affidavit, he also denied that Dr Mahathir is with PH (Pakatan Harapan).

“In response, the affidavits filed by Muhyiddin, Hamzah Zainudin and Capt Suhaimi said that the allegations are twisting the real facts,” Rosli elaborated on his claim of the existence of factual irregularities.

Other defendants today were represented by Datuk DP Naban, Chetan Jethwani and Leonard D. Cruz.

Dr Mahathir and the other plaintiffs were represented by Haniff and his co-counsels.

Malaysia needs ‘fresh start’ and Anwar best PM candidate, PKR man says as DAP demands answer | Malay Mail

KUALA LUMPUR, June 17 — PKR organising secretary Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad has named party president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) best choice for prime minister candidate, amid indecision from the party.

In a series of tweets today, the Setiawangsa MP insisted that the pact has yet to name its choice, and claimed it is unfair to force Anwar to accept Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s leadership — accusing the latter as responsible for putting PH in its current situation.

“Malaysia needs a fresh start, a clean government focused on a more just and equitable economy for all citizens. The best candidate is Anwar Ibrahim,” Nik Nazmi posted.

“As of now PH has yet to reach a consensus on the PM9 issue,” Nik Nazmi he said prior to that.

“Therefore, it is unfair to force Anwar to accept Dr Mahathir as the PM9 candidate for what he has been through before.”

Nik Nazmi’s assertion differs from DAP, who said earlier today that all other parties allied to PH but PKR have decided on Dr Mahathir as prime minister, with Anwar as the deputy.

This comes as Anwar said earlier today that PH has decided who its next candidate for prime minister is, but it will need to refer to Warisan and Dr Mahathir’s bloc before a final decision is reached.

The pact was supposed to finalise its decision yesterday.

“In addition, Tun Dr Mahathir’s record in the power transition issue is what creates uncertainty when PH was governing before this,” Nik Nazmi claimed.

“The political crisis we’ve been through after the Sheraton Move is in part caused by his action to resign without discussing with PH allies and his confidence that Umno and PAS MPs are with him.”

Malay Mail understands that PKR’s allies in PH are pushing Anwar to stop dragging his feet and accept the deal by Dr Mahathir in order for the opposition to take the fight against the Perikatan Nasional government which assumed power from them in February.

Malay Mail previously reported sources as saying PH Plus — the moniker of the alliance between PH, Warisan and Dr Mahathir’s faction in Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia — had proposed Anwar as the deputy prime minister under Dr Mahathir, together with another deputy in Warisan president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.

It is believed that the proposal had two conditions: that Dr Mahathir would only be prime minister for six months, and that Anwar must command the support of Sabah and Sarawak.

Malay Mail also reported that some in the other PH components have also expressed their exasperation against Anwar for allegedly dragging his feet even before the Wednesday meeting ― including by refusing to talk with Dr Mahathir.

KUALA LUMPUR: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) said on Friday (Jun 19) that its president Anwar Ibrahim - and not Dr Mahathir Mohamad - should be Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) choice of candidate for the prime minister post, if the coalition recaptures Putrajaya.

In a statement issued by its central leadership council and Members of Parliament (MP), the party said it remained open to discussion with all parties, including Dr Mahathir, in their efforts to “save Malaysia” and restore the people’s mandate.

“However, the party has decided not to support the proposal nominating Dr Mahathir as prime minister, and holds fast to the PH consensus to nominate Anwar Ibrahim as prime minister,” the statement read.

In thanking the two other PH component parties for consistently supporting Mr Anwar’s candidacy for the premiership, PKR said problems arose when Dr Mahathir had sought to return to the position for the third time.

READ: KL High Court dismisses Mahathir's application for interim injunction to be recognised as Bersatu chairman
This statement came amid an impasse within PH and its allies over the candidates for the prime minister post. A decision on the matter should have been announced on Tuesday, but was delayed as the parties could not reach an agreement.

The three-party PH, Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s faction of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) and Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) - collectively dubbed “PH Plus” - had met last week to discuss the issue.

Democratic Action Party’s (DAP) organising secretary Anthony Loke reportedly said that Dr Mahathir had offered to be prime minister again before handing over the position to Mr Anwar.

However, PKR is not in favour of the proposal, hence the delay in announcing PH’s decision on the matter. The party is cautious of Dr Mahathir’s offer, as he had not committed to a timeline to pass the premiership to Mr Anwar when PH was in power, despite an earlier agreement.

“Keadilan is committed to continue strengthening PH and to continue mobilising the energy of all parties who shared the same understanding to restore the people’s mandate in the near future,” the statement read.

The negotiation over the premiership came as PH strategises its moves to return to federal power, following a week-long political tussle that had resulted in a sudden change of government in February.

Mr Muhyiddin Yassin, who is Bersatu president, had pulled the party out of PH and joined forces with United Malays National Organisation and Parti Islam Se-Malaysia to form the new Perikatan Nasional (PN) government.

Dr Mahathir’s motion of no-confidence vote against Mr Muhyiddin was accepted by the parliament speaker, but the May 18 sitting was only held for the ruler’s speech.

His party membership was subsequently nullified for not sitting with the new PN government during the parliament sitting. Four other Bersatu Members of Parliament, including his son Mr Mukhriz Mahathir, also lost their party membership.

They filed a lawsuit to challenge their removal from the party, while Mr Muhyiddin has applied to strike out the suit.

DAP, AMANAH SAY ANWAR COULD NOT ATTRACT ENOUGH LAWMAKERS TO CLAIM MAJORITY

In an immediate response, DAP and Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) urged PKR to return to a PH decision to name Dr Mahathir as prime minister, as Mr Anwar did not have enough MPs backing him.

Mr Anwar’s nomination as prime minister had been the first option, they said in a statement, and if that fails to garner enough support to wrest back power, the second option would be Dr Mahathir as prime minister and Mr Anwar as his deputy.

“Having exhausted all efforts, we found that the first option only managed to obtain a maximum of 96 MPs, which are 91 from PH (38 PKR, 42 DAP and 11 Amanah), and five more including Dr Mahathir and four Bersatu MPs with him.”

“Mr Anwar’s final efforts to obtain GPS support were not successful within the time frame agreed and (he has) failed to obtain sufficient support,” the statement read. GPS refers to ruling state coalition Gabungan Parti Sarawak.

The two PH component parties hoped that efforts to obtain support through the second option could be carried out as agreed.
