There was a blackout at Washington DC’s Ronald Reagan airport
By Heather Timmons & Tripti Lahiri3 hours ago
Ronald Reagan National Airport, one of the primary airports serving the Washington DC area, registered a power outage beginning at approximately 9:45 pm ET, forcing the airport to put at least some flight takeoffs on hold, and divert others, with many computer systems down. The airport said via Twitter that flights were operating, albeit slowly during the blackout. A little over an hour after lights went out, it said power was restored. The airport didn’t specify a reason for the outage.

Quartz’s White House correspondent Heather Timmons had flown into the airport and was by the luggage belts shortly before the outage. Lights flickered and the luggage belts stopped and started, before the power went out for good. Overhead back-up lights were on for about 20 minutes before also going out.

“Have a seat it’s going to be a while,” was one of the first PA announcements from the airport.

In the luggage area one man handed out luggage bag by bag, before saying, “I can’t do this all night.”

Officials are still investigating the cause of a power outage that plunged much of Reagan National Airport into darkness Wednesday night, but power was restored shortly after 11 p.m. See photos.

WASHINGTON — Officials are still investigating the cause of a power outage that plunged much of Reagan National Airport into darkness Wednesday night, but power was restored shortly after 11 p.m.
Travelers should still expect some flight delays.
The airport tweeted about the outage around 9:50 p.m., describing the outage as “airport wide.”

The outage affected air traffic control. The airport tweeted around 10:40 p.m. that flights were operating but that boarding and deplaning was slow since the power outage was affecting mechanical systems.
One of the generators did start smoking at one point, bringing firefighters to the scene, but it was resolved.
A number of travelers took to social media to detail their outage experiences.

Air traffic control was affected and all flights were put on hold for an hour.
Passengers at the scene described the chaotic scene.
Brigid Evans, who was due to be travelling on Wednesday night to Buffalo, New York, told Daily Star Online: "The power has been out for about an hour.

"It's not fully back yet, it looks like some areas have power and others are still on generators."
An airport spokesman said two power lines which feed the airport had appeared to malfunction, but officials from Dominion Power — which is responsible for Reagan National — had not provided a cause for the faults.
Reagan Airport's official Twitter account tweeted: "Generator backup power is providing lighting to several areas of the terminal."
Later, the same account tweeted: "Flights are operating, however mechanical systems without power are slowing boarding and deplaning."
There were reports of fire and smoke seen at the airport, but this has been denied by officials.

Inbound and outbound flights were bogged down for over an hour in the US capital's primary airport, as it experienced a complete power outage. Stranded travelers have been posting images of the sudden blackout on social media.
Late Wednesday evening, the airport's official account tweeted the management was aware of an "airport-wide" power outage and was investigating its cause.

Confused passengers shared photos and videos of the airport's halls, plunged into darkness by the outage. Announcers were reportedly saying the facility was running on auxiliary power, but judging by the images, the lighting was minimal. One user said luggage belts were not running, either.

A Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority spokesperson said the outage was caused by an issue at Dominion Energy, the company supplying power to the airport, as cited by NBC Washington. The spokesperson also said most flights had taken off for the night and any traffic disruption would not be significant.

The airport later tweeted that flights were operating, but slowed down by unpowered mechanical systems. Lighting was being provided to some areas via backup generators.

Power was restored about an hour after the blackout began.
