Iran says it dismantled a U.S. cyber espionage network

2 Min Read

LONDON (Reuters) - Iran said on Monday it had exposed a large cyber espionage network it alleged was run by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), and that several U.S. spies had been arrested in different countries as the result of this action.
U.S.-Iran tensions are growing following accusations by U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration that Tehran last Thursday attacked two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman, a vital oil shipping route. Iran denies having any role.
The secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Ali Shamkhani, said on Monday: “One of the most complicated CIA cyber espionage networks that had an important role in the CIA’s operations in different countries was exposed by the Iranian intelligence agencies a while ago and was dismantled.”
“We shared the information about the exposed network with our allies that led to the identification and arrest of CIA intelligence agents,” Shamkhani was quoted as saying by the state broadcaster IRIB.

He did not specify how many CIA agents were arrested and in what countries.

Shamkhani said without elaborating that some information about the case had been released by the United States, so Iran could now publish the information for the sake of public awareness.
Trump last year withdrew the United States from a 2015 international nuclear deal with Iran, and is ratcheting up sanctions seeking to end Iran’s international sales of crude oil and strangle its economy.
The United States has deployed a carrier strike group and bombers to the and announced plans to deploy 1,500 troops to the Middle East, prompting fears of a conflict.

Iran's Counter-Intelligence Chief says Tehran has executed a number of online spies linked to the United states, without providing much detail.
The official who has not been identified in Iranian news agency reports said on Tuesday that Iran has "successfully" clamped down on "cyber-spies" he claimed were linked to the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), ISNA reported.
On Monday, Iran's security chief Ali Shamkhani, who heads the Supreme national Security Council, had also made a similar claim. "Iran has recently identified and demolished a large network of CIA spies" he had said, adding that some of the "spies" were executed.
The Intelligence Ministry official speaking to reporters in Tehran on Tuesday repeated the same claim, but it is not clear if he was referring to a new case or to an older episode in early 2010s, which was also carried by ABC News in 2011.
According to the ABC report, "More than a dozen spies working for the CIA in Iran and Lebanon have been caught and the U.S. government fears they will be or have been executed," ABC reported on November 21,2011, adding that "The spies were paid informants recruited by the CIA for two distinct espionage rings targeting Iran and the Beirut-based Hezbollah organization, considered by the U.S. to be a terror group backed by Iran."

It is not clear whether the two officials were talking about the same operation. However, Iranian intelligence officials have repeatedly made boastful claims about countering foreign intelligence operations without substantiating their claims with any evidence.
Like previous cases, the new reports were accompanied by video collages showing rudimentary and often irrelevant scenes and events. Tuesday's report by ISNA was also accompanied by a video.
Every one of the members of the web-based network maintained a website, and the Intelligence Ministry has identified CIA spies and their websites "all over the world," and "shared the information with Iran's Intelligence partners," said the Iranian Counter-Intelligence Chief.
However, the official did not say which intelligence allies of Iran have received the information.
Shamkhani had said on Monday that "the Islamic Republic of Iran has managed to strike one of the most sophisticated cyber-networks of the CIA" which was active in the area of "cyber-espionage."
The claims are very similar to those made in other occasions by other Iranian officials. Intelligence Minister Mahmoud Alavi had claimed on April 19 that Iran has "identified 290 CIA spies in various countries."
In 2001, the ministry claimed it had "identified a complicated espionage and sabotage network" and arrested 30 U.S. "spies." The Ministry announced at the time that the network was active in Iran, UAE, Turkey and Malaysia and that the ministry's officers had arrested several citizens of Malaysia, Slovakia and Morocco.
Nevertheless, Iran's Counter-Intelligence chief said on Tuesday that it was "the first time an extended network of online spies were arrested in Iran." He said some of those arrested have been executed and others "were used" in other operations. However, he did not say who and how many people were arrested, but said that Iran has also identified and arrested the United States' "new recruits."
The official said that the detainees were collecting intelligence in the areas of industry, military, nuclear and cyber activities, and economy.
Various reports during the past year indicated an escalation in both Iran and the United States cyber-attacks on each other's organizations.

VOA News on Iran US Denies Iran's Claim to Have Dismantled, Arrested CIA Cyber Spies

By Michael Lipin, Jeff Seldin

June 18, 2019 08:22 PM

Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani, attends a meeting in Tehran, Jan. 17, 2017.

This article originated in VOA's Persian Service.
The United States has denied new claims by Iranian officials that Tehran and its allies have dismantled a U.S. cyber-spying network as part of a purported operation that led to multiple arrests of U.S. agents.
In a Tuesday statement issued in response to a query from VOA Persian, a U.S. official who declined to be identified, disputed Iran's assertions that it recently successfully targeted a U.S. spy network.
Earlier Tuesday, Iranian state-run news agency IRNA quoted an unnamed director-general of Iran's intelligence ministry as saying his department recently had "identified and dismantled" a U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) cyber-espionage network. The official said Iranian authorities detained and transferred some of the U.S. agents to the judiciary, while other detained agents were undergoing further investigation.
Iran's Supreme National Security Council Secretary Ali Shamkhani made a similar assertion the day before. Iranian state media cited him as saying Tehran provided its allies with information about the alleged CIA network, leading to the arrests of a number of spies in various countries. Neither Shamkhani nor the Iranian intelligence official specified how many alleged CIA agents were arrested or which other countries were involved in dismantling the network.
No other countries had announced arrests in connection with the purported Iranian-led anti-CIA operation by late Tuesday.

Iranian Intelligence Minister Mahmoud Alavi answers questions from lawmakers in an open session of parliament in Tehran, Iran, Oct. 25, 2016.
Iranian Intelligence Minister Mahmoud Alavi previously asserted in April that Tehran had discovered a CIA spy network operating inside Iran and the region.
"In a complicated process against the (CIA), its espionage network was identified with 290 spies in different countries, including Iran," state-run Mehr news agency quoted him as saying. The report also cited Alavi as saying Iran had offered information about the network to "friendly" nations, leading to the arrest of CIA agents.
It was not immediately clear if the alleged CIA network cited by Alavi in April is connected to the purported anti-CIA operation that Shamkhani and the unnamed intelligence official were referring to.
