Section 96A was enacted in 2003 to deter serious tax evasion such as preparation or maintenance of false books of accounts or other records. A person convicted under this section may be liable to pay a penalty of four times the amount of tax evaded, and a fine of up to $50,000 or a jail term of up to five years or both."

Eye specialist Dr Currie Chiang has been suspended for four months, from December 22, by the Singapore Medical Council (SMC).

This follows her conviction by the Subordinate Courts in May 2011 for under declaring her income over two years. For that,

she was imprisoned for six months and fined $117,888.30.

Dr Chiang, who practices in a clinic at the Mount Elizabeth Medical Centre, did not contest the charges brought against her by the SMC.

She will also need to give a written undertaking that she will not repeat the offence, and to pay the cost of the hearing incurred by the SMC.
