PARIS — A gunman opened fire and took hostages at a supermarket in southwestern France on Friday, in what the prime minister called a “serious situation,” rattling nerves in a country that has been the site of several terrorist attacks in recent years.

An armed man entered a Super U market in Trèbes, about 50 miles southeast of Toulouse, claiming to be acting on behalf of the Islamic State, although his connection to the militant group was unclear.

The Paris prosecutor’s office, which handles terrorism cases nationwide, said that a terrorism investigation had been opened, but it did not elaborate.

“Shots were heard, a man appears to be holed up in a supermarket, probably with hostages,” Prime Minister Édouard Philippe said from the eastern city of Mulhouse. “A police operation is underway.”

“All of the information we have at the moment suggests that this is a terrorist attack,” Mr. Philippe said, but he declined to comment on conflicting French media reports that two people had been seriously wounded or even killed.

France continues to be on high alert after deadly terrorist attacks struck the country in 2015 and 2016, mainly in Paris and Nice. Although there have not been any large attacks since the one in Nice in July 2016, there have been several smaller-scale assaults by lone individuals, and the French authorities regularly announce that new plots have been thwarted.

The Interior Ministry said on Twitter that a police operation was underway in Trèbes, and Gérard Collomb, the interior minister, said he was heading to the scene.

The local prefecture said on Twitter that the area around the Super U in that town had been cordoned off.

Frédéric de Lanouvelle, a spokesman for the Interior Ministry, told the BFM TV news channel that the gunman was still inside the supermarket, but he said he could not confirm reports about any dead or wounded.

Earlier Friday, in the neighboring city of Carcassonne, a group of four plainclothes police officers were followed by an armed man in a car who shot at them, according to Mr. Philippe. One officer was wounded, but his life is not at risk, Mr. Philippe said.

Although Trèbes and Carcassonne are very close to each other, it is unclear if the incidents in the two cities were related.

The police and security officers have been targeted in a string of attacks over the past two years.

Three police officers — Franck Brinsolaro, Clarissa Jean-Philippe and Ahmed Merabet — were killed in attacks on the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo and in a Paris suburb in January 2015.

A year later, on the anniversary of the Charlie Hebdo attack, officers fatally shot a man with fake explosives as he tried to attack a police station in northern Paris.

In February 2017, a man armed with two large knives and shouting “God is great” lunged at a military patrol near an entrance to the Louvre. He was shot.

At least two people have been killed after a gunman claiming allegiance to Islamic State took hostages at a supermarket in France following the shooting of a police officer.

Elite police surrounded the store in the town of Trebes, in the south west of the country, on Friday morning as shots were reported.

The hostage-taker - said to be a Moroccan national in his 30s known to the intelligence services - reportedly shouted Allahu Akbar as he burst into the Super U store. He is said to have demanded the release of Salah Abdeslam, the prime suspect in the 2015 Paris attacks.

Police confirmed at least two people have been killed and a dozen more injured. Around 50 people fled the supermarket, but a police chief warned the casualty toll is likely to rise, saying: "We are unfortunately expecting to find more victims."

Shortly beforehand, a police officer jogging with colleagues in the city of Carcassonne, around a 15-minute drive from Trebes, was shot and injured. Local media reported that the two incidents are linked, but this has not been confirmed.

According to French media, the supermarket hostage-taker claimed he is inspired by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil). Police said on Friday afternoon the operation to capture the holed-up attacker was ongoing and it was unclear if hostages remained inside the store.

"We unfortunately presume one person has been killed, but we cannot bring a doctor on site to check," Jean-Valery Lettermann, the regional police chief, added.

Prime Minister Édouard Philippe said the situation was "serious". The French counter-terrorism prosecutor has taken charge of the incident and is treating it as a terror attack.

The French head of government said that at least one police officer had been injured as a result of the attack.

“The counterterrorism office has taken the case; all the information we have as I speak leads us to think that this would be a terrorist act,” Philippe told journalists.

A French Interior Ministry spokesman declined to confirm to BFMTV that two people had been killed in the hostage situation at the supermarket.

The hostage-taker demanded the release of Salah Abdeslam, the only surviving terrorist suspect behind the Paris attacks, BFMTV said. Abdeslam is currently in prison awaiting trial for his alleged involvement in the 2015 Paris terrorist attacks.

According to French media, the perpetrator was of Moroccan origin and was known to intelligence services – particularly the General Directorate for Internal Security (DGSI).

At least two people were injured inside the supermarket, Mayor of Trebes Eric Menassi told BFMTV, calling the situation “a terrible drama.”

The man was shouting “Allahu Akbar” when he entered the supermarket, a witness told Europe 1. The perpetrator allegedly shouted that he was “an Islamic State soldier,” according to witnesses.

The incident took place in the town of Trebes in the south of the country, the French Interior Ministry said on Twitter.

Local residents told the LCI TV channel that they saw many police and gendarmerie units deployed around the supermarket.

Responding to the incident, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe called the situation “very serious.” Interior Minister Gerard Collomb tweeted that he was heading to the scene of the incident.

Minutes before the hostage situation began in the supermarket, a police officer was shot by a gunman while jogging in nearby Carcassonne commune, AFP reported. The shooter opened fire from his car. It is unclear whether the two incidents are connected.
