<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->I WAS excited when my precinct, comprising Blocks 435 to 445, 447, 448, 450, 451 and 454 in Hougang Avenues 8 and 10, was selected for the Lift Upgrading Programme (LUP).
However, many of the residents are worried about having to sacrifice the ventilation, brightness, privacy and safety which we currently enjoy. After reading about the woes faced by Eunos residents in "Here's the lift but there goes the view" (July 11), we are concerned our worries could become a reality.
The Housing Board said that more complaints like those at Eunos are likely to crop up as the LUP moves to other blocks across the island with complex designs. Our precinct is an example of unusual design as we have different blocks joined to each other in L-shapes.
Take the example of Blocks 447 and 448. In order to provide a lift landing on every floor for Block 447, the external lift shaft will block the view from the living rooms of residents in Block 448. The lift-landing convenience for 16 residents in Block 447 will be at the expense of 13 residents in Block 448.
However, residents in Block 448 are not able to exercise their votes for lift upgrading in Block 447 even though they will be directly affected by it.
I hope that the HDB will consider a more balanced solution for residents in these blocks.
