SINGAPORE — Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong was ranked the eighth most admired man by Singaporeans for the second year running, according to survey findings released on Tuesday (23 July).

The only other Singaporean among the top 10 most admired men in the Singapore list is Mandarin pop singer JJ Lin, who took the 10th spot, the global survey conducted by UK-based research firm YouGov showed.

President Halimah Yacob was the 11th most admired woman, according to Singaporeans, while Ho Ching, the wife of PM Lee, was ranked 15th, right after US pop singer Taylor Swift.

Former US president Barack Obama topped the list as the man most admired by Singaporeans for the second year running, followed by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, American business magnate Warren Buffet, Alibaba co-founder Jack Ma and Hong Kong actor Jackie Chan.

Like her spouse, former first lady of the US Michelle Obama topped the list for the most admired woman by Singaporeans for the second year running, followed by Queen Elizabeth II in second place.

Ellen Degeneres, Oprah Winfrey and Angelina Jolie rounded up the top five.

Over 42,000 respondents in 41 countries were polled online from March to June for the annual survey, of whom 1,112 were Singaporeans.

YouGov started by gathering open-ended nominations from panellists across the 41 countries, who were asked to nominate public figures who they most admire and are currently alive.

The data collected was used to compile a list of the world’s most admired 20 men and 20 women, based on the most nominations received and the individuals being nominated in at least four countries.
An additional 10 popular local figures were separately added to the lists for individual countries.

These lists were used to poll each country with two questions: “who do you truly admire?”, where respondents could make multiple selections, and “who do you most admire?”, where they could only pick one.

Looking at some of the entries for the women's list, the 'survey' is farcical and should be disregarded.
