Fancy joining a holiday tour group led by your Member of Parliament (MP)?

This seems to be precisely what is happening in Aljunied and Hougang!

Hougang MP Yaw Shin Leong and Aljunied MP Low Thia Khiang will be leading such a holiday tour group to China in early November.

The group, made up of residents from the two constituencies, will be holidaying in Kunming, Dali and Lijiang.

This is not the first time that holiday tours were organised by Worker's Party MPs.

Low, the former MP for Hougang, have been leading tour groups in his former constituency to places like the Three Gorges in China, as well as to Taiwan in the past years.

These tours are now also available to Aljunied residents ever since the Worker's Party scored a victory in the constituency at the recent elections.

The MPs believe that the tour will help residents from the two constituencies get to know each other better.

According to Yaw, there are many elderly residents in Hougang and Aljunied who love to take part in such activities.

However, past experience indicate that the tours have been popular with residents of all ages and not just the elderly.

Finally, Yaw added, "Everyone is relaxed when holidaying, including Mr Low and me. This will be a great opportunity to interact with the residents. They can also holiday with the MPs as friends."

Will the English experts please clarify:

(1) in the above statement, "including Mr Low and me" or "including Mr Low and I" ?

(2) can the word "holiday" be used as a verb ?

(1) Mr Low and me. "I" is a subject pronoun. "Me" is an object pronoun. "Subject" is the agent, the actor, although in the passive voice, it's possible for the subject to be the target of actions rather than the actor e.g "I was hit by a car" as opposed to "Me was hit by a car". You use "I' if you say "Mr Low and I went (verb) to...."

(2) "Holiday" can be used as a intransitive verb. Intransitive verbs have no objects, transitive verbs have objects. "Think" is an intransitive verb if you say "Think before you act". "Think" is a transitive verb if there's an object e.g "Think the matter (object) through".

This has taken a life of its own. Something that PA started decades ago is now part of the political toolbox. I remember that NTUC omnibus unions to draw membership introduced as well. It also landed Phey into hot water. I am sure Low and Yaw would agree that this should not be the way but it is now too embedded to get away. I wonder what is the ethnic take- up on these tours.

I don't mind signing up if my MP were to lead a holiday tour group to Lanfang Republic.

It's a good idea for the MP of the constituency to participate in a tour group or outing with their constituents -not exactly to lead like a tour guide but to join or participate in an outing. If MPs can do it - be they from WP, PAP or SDP - rather than just official RC or constituency activities, it will foster a closer relationship - and probably loyal supporters.

Very often our MPs also value their private life. When attending official functions, they often leave their children and spouse at home. It is a very Asian thing, I think. The angmohs often expect you to include their spouse as well.

I supposed if you want to be an MP, the private life has to be sacrificed somewhat.

How can you ask pap mps to attend to such small matters..... ask PA can liao. :D

PA? NTUC? We now know what those are all about. You're talking about the bad old days, man. The days where MPs are perceived as demi gods are no more. Times have changed, move on...

Where did you get the idea that MPs in those days were treated as Demi-gods? First I heard of it. They are politicians and were never ever in the upper ranks of respectable vocations, before and now.

Well I am thinking lion dances, the army of porlumpars that go everywhere they go, holding umbrellas, the banging of the drums.... Yes, those were the days when the MPs lord over the ignorant and the poor who were mostly uneducated. A session with the MPs then was like a meeting with Tua Pek Kong.

I won't be surprised that those who join LTK/WP in these tours are no different from those in the PAP wards.

Yes and you can be sure the US and Europe will welcome your $$$ with open arms. If you think those continents are "first world", man you must be living under a rock or hopelessly not in touch with current economics.

LKY always go China for holiday. I wonder why he never ask Tanjong Pagar residents along.

Even if he asks and invites, you think anyone will want to go with him?

Don't know. Never tested for a long time. The last round missed by a few seconds.

not talking about future, but right now.

The only time and place and distance any PAP entity has taken the hoi polloi anywhere was when Kee Chiu ferried oldies from TP constituency to the polling station.

Of cos, post GE, oldies are not going anywhere anytime soon.

Dun you think the Emperor is still revered as such by the ignorant? Try getting to meet him in person at MPS. He should be choh bo since he has relinquished all his political posts save as MP.
