I have said please get far far away from Sinkies!
A 61-year-old woman has been found guilty of repeatedly harassing her female neighbour, after a string of incidents that included verbal abuse, hitting her with a plastic pipe and smashing flower pots outside the neighbour’s flat.
The accused, Sarjeet Kaur d/o Swarn Chand, claimed trial but was convicted on all six charges after a three-day hearing. The verdict was delivered on Jan 21.
Sarjeet faced six charges, including voluntarily causing hurt, committing rash acts that endangered others and offences under the Protection from Harassment Act.
According to the prosecution, the incidents took place on Aug 13 and Aug 16, 2023, at a HDB block along Bedok South Road. The victim was her neighbour, Wang Xueling (transliteration), who lived on the same floor.
On Aug 13 at about 6.55pm, Sarjeet allegedly swung a broom at Wang’s flat window. While Wang did not manage to capture the attacker on video, she told the court that she recognised the voice as Sarjeet’s.
Three days later, on Aug 16 at about 9.44pm, Sarjeet was said to have thrown a broom into Wang’s flat, in breach of a Personal Protection Order. She also allegedly hurled insults and struck Wang’s left arm with a plastic pipe, causing redness and swelling. CCTV footage was shown in court, and the prosecution said it captured Sarjeet throwing the broom and hurting Wang.
Later that same night, at about 11.16pm, Sarjeet was accused of damaging flower pots and a trolley outside Wang’s flat. Although Wang did not catch this on camera, Sarjeet admitted in a statement recorded the next day that she had picked up the flower pots and thrown them to the ground. In another statement recorded on Dec 5, she also admitted to kicking the flower pots.
The judge convicted Sarjeet on all six charges and directed the prosecution to prepare a report to assess whether she is suitable for mandatory treatment. The case will be adjourned to Feb 27 for sentencing.
