JOHOR BARU — Johor prince Abdul Jalil Iskandar Ibrahim Ismail Sultan Ibrahim*passed away today. He was 25.
The fourth of six children of the Johor Sultan, he died in a Johor hospital at 7.11pm after a fight against liver cancer. *News of his death was announced by the Johor Council of the Royal Court president Abdul Rahim Ramli.
"Condolences on the passing of Tunku Abdul Jalil. May his soul be blessed," Prime Minister Najib Razak said in a tweet tonight.
The prince was diagnosed with stage four liver cancer last year and received a liver transplant*in China.
The Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, last month expressed disappointment over rumours of his son's condition. *
"Tunku Abdul Jalil complained of back pain and he is in hospital for treatment because there is no medical equipment we can use at the palace. His condition is stable, contrary to what is being spread on social media," the Sultan had said then.
The prince's fight against cancer drove the royal family to set up the*Tunku Laksamana Johor Cancer Foundation, aimed at helping cancer patients in need of treatment and financial aid.
“It is my hope that cancer patients will be cured. I have gone through what they are going through, and I know how hard it is to live with cancer," the prince said in an interview in March this year.
He added that while he had a successful live transplant, he still had to undergo weekly treatments in Singapore.
Reports said that he loved wildlife and animals and was once a volunteer zookeeper in Singapore and London.
The prince is*a commissioned police inspector and held the post of the Royal Chief of Staff of the Johor Palace.
Malaysian media reports say he will be buried at the*Mahmoodiah Royal Mausoleum in Johor Baru*tomorrow.
