Longhouse@Thomson..

if its satay its the coffeeshop next to swee choon. currently a bit blocked from massive roadworks construction.. corner of syed alwi and jln besar

yah that is the one, i know where izzit. been eating around that area for a long time. scissors curry rice, kiat sng kio laksa etc all nearby also.

Problem of illegal parking will not go away. Not only Longhouse customers but have to deal with cars waiting to pick up their kids from tuition centres there as well as some other makan outlets etc. Paid parking at Longhouse will exacerbate the problem. Not solved it. S'poreans will try to save some money finding carpark lots elsewhere.

Not aware A&W was there previously. I usually makan the chicken rice if there. Western food not too bad too. If at Shell petrol kiosk, will ta pau the goreng pisang.

The Shell Petrol station is a history by itself, it had been there since Taman Permata was built, that would be in the region of 1965/1966. I use to eat at Long House very often. It was an A&W restaurant way back. The OCBC Bank building next to long house, was the former Tat Lee Bank Branch & near to the Shell petrol Station, at the shophouses is Hainanese Chicken Rice Shop, I think is "Meng Kee"?? memory bad these days. It had been there for a long, long time too.

Many of us would have missed Lakeview shopping centre, market & food centre, would remember the two Cantonese Resturants, of Ying Kee & I think, "Cheong Kee". The char kway teow, hay mee, the laksa, the mee pok tar...and to mention the Radio Taxi Station..."Lake view taxi Stand"..sure have gone down memory lane...

Was there a few days back. The chicken rice with drumstick, is 70cts cheaper than elsewhere. Goreng pisang is also a draw.

The goreng pisang has been there for a very long time, unfortunately it is not opened at night, I like the "hay mee", chicken rice...

coincidentally, just discovered the satay there 2 weeks ago. LOVE the pork satay, like eating bak kwa, plus they have pineapple...
been ta pauing quite often !

Yes, the Chinese satay is just great. especially with the pineapple sauce. The char siew noodle is another of my favourite.

Thanks for the info. Almost bought a terrace house in the late 90s at Taman Permata. But $$$$ exceeded my budget. In the late 60s or early 70s, my school bus driver would drive to Taman Permata to pick up a student. That was my first 'connection' with that place.

Yes. Noticed that a week ago. Residents are still complaining of illegal parking behind Longhouse. Been complaining since Longhouse started biz. A matter of time before the land will be used for building of apartments.

Already happened to a nearby smaller food court. A few year ago it was turned into apartments, I think it's now known as Thomson V

There used to be a few shop houses on the stretch before the bank. I remember there was a Standard Charter bank there. Surprised that the shop houses were demolished & that space has been left vacant for 12+ years .
The parking area would have relieved some of the parking problem in that area.

The 90's would be more than 1m for a house on the average, even the "original" not "crispy", ha ha ha, that is, those without much renovation, still cost to a million. Now, don't ask, unless you have the money. The 80's was a better time to buy a house there, affordable.

Why HDB demolished Lakeview Shopping Centre, Food Centre & Wet Market, only people who worked for HDB would know. It is more than a decade that the land was left empty. Some rumours said it had to do with the land lease!? when they announced the Thomson line, I thought they would use that land for a station, but they didn't. Yes, Standard Chartered Bank was there, now they are along the row of shop houses next to the Post Office, which incidentally will be gone soon.

i think a whole hdb estate was demolished due to pap disadvantage during GE. the land i think still empty now. not too sure izzit used to be under SDP Ling How Doong.

I thought it was demolish because govt knew that piece of land is going to be very valuable with Thomson line? I don't recall that estate has many homes as is quite low rise and many shops.

You are wrong on this, that area is under former Thomson constituency, I think it merged into Bishan GRC, it was a PAP stronghold for decades with what his name MP?? I can recall the face but not the name. Though votes were dropping. I did a google, I think it was Lau Peng Sum, name cropped up with the AIM SAGA!!

Why Lakeview Shopping etc was demolished, only those in planning may know, Lakeview HUDC ( I think it is) is still around, they should have demolished everything there, but didn't.

They were to demolish Long House, some rumours, but it is still there, the parking problems still persists, due to the tight & limited spaces, & wonder if that 'drinking hole' at the corner of the shop houses still there. The situation is further exacerbated by more eating places sprouting up along the stretch of shop houses.

Honest, when the arhictects or urban planners of the day, did not plan it to accomodate so many vehicles, well, back then, the population was smaller & so was the car population. Despite the Every Day Rob People (ERP), car population had grown. Every "Thomas, Donald & Harold", owns a car literally, reference the recent "anal doctor" of PE. So go eat, must bring car along...

If you look at the virtual map of the area, you'll see that the proposed MRT stations are now included in the map.

I heard that the post office is being moved to the CC at Bishan.

Oh! you would remember the Post Master & his family that lives on top of the Post Office? ( the Chinese guy) & the postmen & their families at the back of the P.O. You would staying around Jalan Keli Area then...back then, the sender forgets the house address, just write , Name, Post code...& the letter gets delivered..it was such a close bond between the people back then, even the small traders, like the bread man, the Indian glazier that repairs broken windows, the knife sharperner, the Malay Kebun with his law mover on his bicycle...the list goes on...
