After Tuesday's widespread riots, London was largely quiet as 16,000 police officers were out on the streets. Despite a large crowd gathering in Eltham, south east London, no disturbances were reported.

The root cause of the riots in the UK: The revenge of the "lost" caste

(To borrow a phrase from Winston Churchhill for this situation)
"Never was so much wealth been owned by the rich over the poor"

** London has the biggest Rich Poor divide **

London has become the most unequal city in the western world, with the difference between rich and poor creating an Indian style “social caste” system, a leading academic claims.

In a new book, Injustice: Why Social Inequality Exists, Professor Danny Dorling underlines many of the issues raised by the Evening Standard's Dispossessed campaign to highlight the plight of the capital's underclass.

The book discloses that the richest tenth of people had an average wealth of £933,563, a figure 273 times greater than the lowest 10 per cent, with an average wealth of £3,420.

The gap is bigger than comparable cities such as New York or Tokyo.

The disclosures will add pressure on all parties to campaign on eradicating poverty.

Professor Dorling said: “The wealth gap has created a social divide so big it now resembles an Indian caste system where people in London only mix with those from their own income brackets and have little to do with those outside.”

He spoke of a servant culture between poor and rich: “They serve in coffee shops, clean houses, make beds in hotels, care for their children and drive their cars and taxis.”

Professor Dorling, a professor of social geography at Sheffield University, concluded: “We are getting wealth inequalities in London now that have not been seen since the days of a slave-owning elite.”

Singapore's MM LEE always like to replicate the UK ways/systems.
But it is very sad that the UK has become like these.
What is worst, self-destructing or to be destroy by others externally?

That reminded me of my fave song from PSB - King's Cross, their song about London.

Love this live performance when the audience was so unified with the start of the song. Totally awesome!

Another version - live performance

this is what will happen when the police force replace police officers with high tech survallance camera. Without the show of force, the rioters wont be afraid of the camera mounted on lamp posts. The same thing is also happening here as SPF is now heavily reliance of camera to monitor crime. But the cameras will be useless in the event of a social unrest. camera only useful in recording in crime as evidence while a actual police officer on the ground can deter a crime from happening.

the underlying root cause= rich/poor divide, which is apalling in many countries including our tiny red dot.
it's a good learning point for our garmen... just whether they want to learn from it or not..

----------------------------------------------------------------------

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has welcomed Prime Minister David Cameron’s announcement that the cost of damage caused during recent riots will be settled under Riot Act police compensation schemes.

The ABI has also welcomed the Prime Minister’s agreement to extend the period in which claims can be made under the schemes from 14 to 42 days.

The Prime Minister’s announcement came alongside the ABI’s revised £200 million plus estimate for claims likely to be paid out by the insurance industry in connection with the riots, and the industry is now offering the Government the following help to enable police compensation schemes to be run effectively:

Senior claims directors to provide overall strategic advice to the Government.

Technical claims handler experts to assist with adjudication.

Actuarial assistance to ensure the Government is able to accurately quantify the cost of the scheme going forward.

Assistance in developing a workable claims notification form.

Assistance in negotiating appropriate rates with loss adjusters.

Commenting on developments, ABI director general, Otto Thoresen, says: “The insurance industry is already paying out claims to people with insurance, but wants to do more to support the Government in helping people get back on their feet.”

He adds: “We will work in partnership with the Government, and share our expertise, to make sure that the police compensation schemes work effectively and get compensation to people who need it quickly.”

In a statement to Parliament earlier today, Mr Cameron said: “The Government will ensure the police have the funds they need to meet the cost of any legitimate claims.”
