Taipei, April 7 (CNA) The Taiwan Taoyuan District Court on Monday sentenced Wang Kuei-fen, a politician from Luzhu in Taoyuan County to five months in prison for slapping a nurse in the face last year after a dispute over her hospitalized father.
Wang may not have to do any prison time, however, because the court gave her the option paying a fine of NT$2,000 per day for five months instead of going to jail.
The politician, a member of the Kuomintang, can appeal the verdict.
The case originated when Wang, a Luzhu Township representative, went to Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Linkou in November 2013 after a nurse refused to give her information on her father's medical condition over the phone.
After arriving at the hospital, she got into an argument with the nurse and slapped her twice.
The Taoyuan District Prosecutors' Office then charged Wang with public insult and assault for her actions.
According to the hospital, the 33-year-old nurse was following hospital procedures when she refused to disclose medical information of a patient over the phone.
