There is no loophole in the law. The labour laws are there to ensure that minimum standards are there but more importantly it is to protect the employers's interest and investment. The minimum standards is probably the worst in the world. These set of the labour laws were plus the ban on labour strikes without following the procedures, seeking ballots etc were the part of the toolset that was used by EDB to bring large MNCs to set up factories, plants, banks, etc.

In those days it was a sweet deal for Singaporeans as it meant jobs for Singapoans. We had the best suite of employers laid out like a buffet. The best factory was HP near Alexandra where first class food at the canteen and great working environment. Job hopping so common.

These same set of laws no longer attract employers and MNCs. It now attracts cheaper labour who can take over local labour with a series of termminations. The new set of political leaders are using the same set of toolsets with no clue about its relevancy or applicability.

After 3 episodes of going postal, the US postal employees are now working in an excellent environment. Their employers are dead scared as well as their customers who used to shout and yell at them across the counter. Now days customer tip toe silently thru the doors in case it makes too much noise, queue quietly and when it is their turn they ask politely if the staff is ok to handle their transactions. Once the nod is given the transaction is done. On completion, a big thank you is offered at least twice and a polite wave is shown as the back is turned.

Dear Philip:

If you feel you have been unfairly treated by your employer, there is little you can do to legally fight back (I know it sucks, but office is autocratic, not democratic). the best solution is to get a shotgun, go back during regular office hours, and blast the weapon at those who you wish to take out. In the US, this is known as "going postal." And its happened before.

Cheers!

This goes to show that the policymakers of the elite Admin Service do NOT have commercial experience. They do have impressive academic qualifications though.

I hope that LEEgime will recruit more of these scholars.

It's becoming blatantly obvious why the government has no choice but to import talent. Singapore is full of these losers and there comes a point in time when liabilities like these need to be written off so the nation can move forward with confidence.

Can these losers move to NZ? Sinkapore need to create space for the foreigners.

Where is the exploitation??

The biggest cheats at the workplace aren't employers. It's the employees who do not deliver on their side of the deal.

Ask yourself how many employees who are paid to do 8 hours of work a day actually put in 8 hours of effort. The majority spend working hours doing tasks unrelated to work or are simply idling their time away at the employer's expense.

But, but, but ...my boss set targets, I meet them all ...he then adds more ...my 8-hr days become 16-hour days with no pay increase or higher bonus. Like that how?

U think employees so free as to enjoy their free time in the office is it? when work is done go home. But most bosses will just give their people more work so they have to stay back. And I have seen bosses who are not happy when their employees leave on time for home when all the work is done. This is singkie culture,,as if stay back in office for 12 hrs so fun like that,,,

Spending 10 to 12 hours at the office does not equate to 10 to 12 hours of work. I know exactly what happens in sinkie offices. I used to work in one both as employee and employer.

PMETs are by far the biggest target for retenchment last year and maybe this year too...

http://sbr.com.sg/hr-education/news/chart-day-665-laid-off-workers-in-2012-are-professionals

Chart of the Day: 66.5% of laid off workers in 2012 are professionals

According to Nomura, layoffs peaked in 2012 to 11,010, compared to 9,990 in 2011, and warrants monitoring, especially in the light of weak external demand and the on-going labor market restructuring.

On a quarterly basis, the rate of layoffs has picked up from 2,600 in 1Q2012 to 3,350 in 4Q2012. This number improved slightly in 1Q2013 with layoffs of 2,000.

Here's more from Nomura:

It is interesting to note that 66.5% of resident workers laid off in 2012 were from the Professionals, Managers, Executives and Technicians occupational group.

The positive news is that many of those who were laid off have been able to find work in short time.

However it is worth pointing out that the Ministry of Manpower has highlighted that there has been a fall in job openings over the past 12 months, especially in the PMET (-14%) , clerical, services and sales workers (-18%) and production, transport and laborers (-18%).

Declines were also observed in the wholesale trade and manufacturing segments, which contracted 33% and 23% respectively.

and all these are a result of PAP's factory production like education system that kills creativity and independent thinking.

who is the one who sets the policy will be the one who should be responsible,

not sure which era you are from, definitely my time, our brains are engineered not to ask many questions and to be an obedient student. creativity is definitely not in our textbooks.
