Loan-shark runner fined $480k, jailed 16 months
HE WAS arrested on March 30 in an islandwide operation by the police against unlicensed moneylenders.
Toh Kai Boon, 28, had with him five ATM cards and 41 bank transaction receipts.
On Thursday, he was fined $480,000 and jailed for 16 months after he admitted assisting a loan shark on 46 occasions in March.
The jobless man will have to serve a further five years in prison if he fails to pay the fine.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Edward Ti told the court that Toh had been jailed 11 months in 2008 for abetting an unlicensed moneylender and was liable for enhanced punishment introduced early last year.
Investigations revealed that he had been working for a loan shark, identified only as Brian, since November 2009.
