LKY still speaking in public at 89 years old...

Kra canal have been discuss for more than 50 year. And will never take off because construction cost and land acquisition very costly. Estimate for construction cost only will be US$30b and take 10~15 year and calculate the interest for 10 year total cost will balloon to US$50b. Toll for the ship will not able to cover the cost.

The only way is built refinery in Thailand, off load raw oil in West of the Kra and use pipe to transfer to East Kra and process it and load onto ship . Then Jurong Island will be useless.

Technology and the capacity of countries to afford such a project have now made it quite viable. Also, the Chinese never take a short term view on anything. They think 50-100 years. I believe the canal will eventually be built and far quicker than most people expect. It will have an economic and strategic dimension. Cutting the canal means that symbolically the whole of mainland Southeast Asia - Laos, Vietnam, Burma & Thailand - comes far more easily under the Chinese sphere of influence.

Avoiding use of the Straits Of Malacca by most shipping would also mean the marginalisation of the largest Southeast Asian state - Indonesia - which would increasingly become the main foil to greater Chinese inroads into the region.

I would strongly urge China and Thailand to quickly tie-up an agreement to move ahead with cutting the canal at the Kra Isthmus.

That's why sinkapore will kowtow to China on all issues. The SMRT strike by the Chinese drivers shows how afraid sinkees are of the Chinese; instead of being harsh, the SMRT management had to admit that they were wrong to address the issues expeditiously. The minister has pushed the issue into the future, believing that sinkees will forget about it. The PAP government won't dare to treat the Chinese workers harshly for fear of retribution.

Sinkapore is as good as part of China ...that's a fact that sinkees have to accept. Eventually, half the population of Sinkapore will be PRC nationals.
okay, here's my own conspiracy theory, which is probably not unique:

Most, if not all, of the RICH and POWERFUL people around the world know that Singapore is THE, or at least the top, financial centre in Southeast Asia; and they also know that it's the financial centre which controls, at least indirectly, the economy of any particular region.

So if the GOVERNMENT (and its cronies) of China wants to control Southeast Asia, it will have to do so INDIRECTLY, and the best way is to do so VIA the Singapore GOVERNMENT (and its cronies).

Ultimately, BOTH governments (and their cronies) are in cahoots with each other to control the whole (both north and south) of East Asia (excluding Japan, which is controlled by the USA), and they are both on the winning side, winning greater and greater political power and financial wealth year after year; and neither of them are kowtowing to anyone.

The losers, as has ALWAYS been the case, are the slaves, i.e. the lower class and the middle class and sometimes even those near the bottom of the upper class.

Also, it's not just the governments of China and Singapore being in cahoots with each other.
Most, if not all, governments and their cronies around the WORLD are in cahoots with one another to control the WHOLE world, using the 3 Bs, i.e. Bribing, Bullying, and Brainwashing.

And this status quo will not change until the end of the world.

It's just a fact of life that for the past few thousand years of the history of humanity, the VAST majority of human beings have always ended up being slaves in one form or another because of whatever reasons; and there are no signs that this status quo will change any time soon.
